The orgy.
It is less of a descent and more of a freefall. Some laugh, imagining they are on an amusement park ride, while others—feeling their stomachs in their throats—experience the exact opposite, praying for it all to end quickly, in the hope of a future that is currently unimaginable.
The events unfolding these days—the youth demonstrations and strikes across Europe—resemble a socio-political and moral abscess that has burst, spewing forth potentially virulent pus. The architects of the relevant governments—both past and present—having sold themselves to the economy, betrayed their own people, and squandered the cultural heritage of Europe’s Christian-socialist tradition, can only respond with grim condemnation and crude repression. Ironically, this is precisely what the protesters themselves denounce and seek to impose upon a ruling class that, beneath its superficial veneer, is entirely uniform.
This ruling class is utterly beholden to progressivism, Atlanticism, and globalism—even at the cost of a nation’s spirit, identity, and vocation. By focusing solely on its own interests, it has achieved the remarkable feat of losing all credibility—not only in the eyes of the "ignorant, populist" masses (as they perceive them), but also among prominent intellectuals from both the self-styled right and the self-styled left. The only exceptions are the mere stenographers—the hacks working for "pornographic" media outlets and the "Pornhub-style" regime television channels, all of which are controlled by interests beyond our borders. It is the narrative of the “aggressor-victim” chorus; of the new arms race—justified by the claim that “otherwise, they’ll reach Lisbon”; of a declared genocide—while it’s deemed better to focus on the story of the villain Mladić; of the “we’re the good guys, let everyone in” mentality; of the ubiquitous, knee-jerk accusation that “you’re a fascist”; of the disarming dismissal, “you’re a conspiracy theorist”; and of the mantra, “science says so.” These are just a few of the talking points—delivered like clockwork to the desks of so-called “real journalists” (a term they use to stem the loss of clicks and viewership, and to discredit other colleagues or accidental reporters). These same “real journalists” now have no qualms about buying clips from those very people—clips they present as “disturbing footage” just to rake in a few extra hits, even when the content is entirely unremarkable. They feign concern for the sensibilities of others, all while pocketing cash to parrot exactly what they’ve been told to say—videos preceded by a sensationalist, almost salacious warning that leaves even the most guileless viewer wondering: why is that even there?
The emerging, two-pronged phenomenon—a mix of popular repression and a yearning for strong-arm government—is a byproduct of the decades-long, empty promises and sell-out policies of the Left, which has largely governed European nations. For the most part, the Left remained silent about the globalist agenda—an agenda driven by a calculated, devastating policy of mass immigration. Much like these “real journalists,” they pretended to look out for their own constituents while, in reality, betraying them. The transition from mere estrangement to a full-blown divorce—however one might measure the time it took—is now complete. Love has been replaced by hatred; respect, by violence. Seduced and bedazzled by the charlatan’s equation—progress equals well-being—and doused in the sorcerous potions of "democracy," the entire political establishment has embraced the globalist-capitalist-financial order—with which, it is clear, it has long been in a state of illicit union. Faced with the slow, encroaching tsunami of a "throwaway" culture—where consumption serves as the sole pillar of society and opulence is presented as an inescapable destiny—the political class found itself with no other choice.
This was less a union than a crude, sordid transaction, giving rise to a reality where everything is replicated, everything is coveted, everything is meant to be replaced, everything is fleeting, everything is possible, and everything is "mine." In this state, the meaning and value of authenticity, abstinence, frugality, care, consideration, restraint, community, and one’s own historical biography have all been forgotten.
Zygmunt Bauman (1925–2017) foresaw this entire liquefaction of Europe’s traditional cultural fabric—a process later amplified by the mass adoption of the web, ridden by social media, devoured by the demented form of intelligence known as "artificial," and swallowed and digested by the supra-continental operators of the day. This has been further compounded by nations that have shamelessly thrown themselves wide open to these external forces.
While one might point to the specific, nefarious figures within the halls of power as the direct culprits behind the unrest currently unfolding across Europe, from both an anthropological and a Christian perspective, this represents nothing more than a culpable drift in politics—a drift endorsed and validated by the intellectuals. Categories which, under the pressure of materialism and rationalism—a pressure that reached revolutionary extremes beginning with the upheavals of 1968 and 1977—have granted free expression, affirmation, and absolution to human dimensions that, according to all the wisdom traditions throughout history and across the globe, These factors correspond to what keeps us in a state of unawareness, leaving us susceptible to individual and social degradation.
In Christianity, this observation finds its peak in the so-called "capital" (deadly) sins; in certain schools of psychology, it is identified as the dominion of the ego; in Mesoamerican traditions, it is framed as "self-importance" and "self-indulgence"; in Buddhist thought, it centers on the human delusion of being separate from the cosmos; and in the Taoist tradition—which views *Qi* as the energy source for all worldly manifestations—believing oneself to be distinct from this energy (and from everything else) means remaining far removed from true knowledge.
Consequently, by shaping individuals solely focused on success, the "other"—who should be seen as a brother or a fellow human—is instead transformed into an obstacle or an enemy. Even if the masses who follow this individualistic path—sated by the cognitive drug of "I want"—might claim that things are "not so bad," the destiny they are unwittingly hurtling toward is one of profound vulnerability and an almost unmanageable collapse for the individuals involved. Belonging, identity, and rootedness are not merely separate components, but a constitutive triad that forms one’s sense of self—a vital safeguard against perdition, existential failure, and personal or social ruin.
It seems logical to attribute to this dark trajectory those nefarious acts—harmful both to others and to the perpetrators themselves—committed by individuals and groups raised on ephemeral, shifting, and short-lived values. Such people are trapped in the straitjacket of voracious, short-sighted aspirations: consumerist, hedonistic, imitative, and obsessed with opulence. And from where else could phenomena such as the commodification of the womb, "woke" culture, the erasure of cultures, and the emergence of "unnatural" forms of parenthood possibly arise? We find ourselves, therefore, at the center of a Panopticon-like landscape, where those unaware of the situation—incapable of grasping that what has been alluded to here serves as a flimsy, elusive foundation for a truly full life—proceed serenely, their pockets filled with the Champions League, a BMW, trips to the shopping mall, a second home, and a weekend of sports.
This uncontrolled and uncontrollable descent is now manifest and incontrovertible. There are no cures for organisms suffering from terminal, degenerative diseases—only palliatives that merely prolong an agony of unpredictable, yet certainly painful, duration. Final thrashings, sudden surges, the songs of (black) swans, and last gasps can only serve to drag out the torment.
Even those who do not consider themselves "unaware"—though they inevitably possess resources that are laughably meager compared to those at the disposal of the "engineers" of this system, along with their private power structures, shadowy lobbies, military apparatuses, and sprawling, opaque networks—find themselves, like lone wolves, tacitly converging on a shared sentiment: both fearing and hoping for an end that is as imminent and sudden as possible. It is a grim existential consolation—inherently individualistic—hoped for in the name of a new life, a neo-socialist rebirth that might, for a time—at least for a few generations to come—learn to make something of the current era, which has unfolded as a comedy, then a drama, and is now a tragedy. Those who will survive are the "engineers" themselves and their acolytes, finally unburdened by the concern for the eight billion human beings—and the "waste" they represent—that once kept them awake at night.
The dead end into which we have wandered offers no way out. The final act of the Babel-like epic in which we have played a part will see us all huddled even more tightly together—a Hieronymus Bosch-esque, filthy orgy of sauces for poisonous food—jostling for shoddy goods and doses of technology deemed "necessary" by progress, alongside designer labels, deemed "necessary" for the sake of appearances. And, as if that were not enough, we are ready to turn whatever comes to hand into a weapon, just to survive a brutal, no-holds-barred struggle among the poor—a fight against "the other," waged in defense of something utterly trivial, certainly not for any values that haven't been dead for decades. Even those who are more clear-sighted—though against their will—are swept along by a current they long tried, unsuccessfully, to brake, contain, or evade.
What is unfolding in Italy and across Europe is, in part, the result of all this. While the aware are culturally and politically alarmed, and the individualists weigh the pros and cons, the "engineers" of this collapse are reveling in the success of their decades-long project of social disintegration—a project built through cultural demolition, the cultivation of loneliness, the erosion of belonging and rootedness, and the injection of massive, horse-sized doses of nihilistic desire directly into the bloodstream of our collective thought. This is driven by a regressive form of advertising, leaving us as if trapped inside an inescapable sponge, bloated with grinning DJs.
It goes without saying that everyone, in their own way, finds themselves speculating about what kind of human being—and what kind of society—will emerge after this ruinous, blood-soaked orgy. One conjecture envisions the arrival of a figure who might be described as the "square root" of Nietzsche’s "last man"—a being situated at the furthest possible remove from a "fulfilled" human, yet one who is acutely aware of his own creativity and regenerative power, capable of launching ruthless ambushes against his own self-indulgence. This is a "fulfilled" human being of a kind that European culture—with its foundations in Christianity, socialism, and the welfare state—could never have conceived, not even under the influence of psychotropic drugs or the most feverish, tortured imagination.
Given such a diminished spirit, it seems reasonable to assume a society easily organized along rational-hierarchical lines by *kapos* and their shadowy "techno-generals." It would be a civilian replica of a military structure, in which every individual’s tasks, responsibilities, rewards, and punishments are defined by a rigid, universal code—or left to the discretion of a superior, whose punitive judgments would depend entirely on his own level of vanity. If this breed of officer—lacking both the mustache and the rank insignia of the old guard—were to become the norm, then their counterparts—those beloved commanders who truly cared for and dedicated themselves to their subordinates—would fade into mere memory, accessible only to a generation now on the verge of extinction. The last generation, perhaps, to take to the streets without a second thought for what they were wearing.
