It all carried something of an England-Argentina vibe and for Carrick it represents a problem. This season will be a darned sight harder the last one. It will test his squad in every way. This week, for example, United must play in the Champions League on Thursday before hosting Manchester City three days later. Ouch.

Carrick will need his team to show more resolve than this. He will need to see a greater killer instinct. He will need to see his captain Bruno Fernandes jumping to his feet when tickled by James Tarkowski rather than lying down as though sniper shot.

At the moment the good stuff - and there is a fair amount of it - is in danger of being buried beneath bad habits. After three games - two against promoted clubs - United are in the bottom half and that should serve as warning if nothing else.

There's a sense of shock in United’s ranks as they file onto the bus now. Matheus Cunha has stopped to speak to a Brazilian broadcaster but everyone else is heading through with their heads bowed. Probably still in shock at how that near-certain win got away from them.

I still believe he's a young player. As a lot of people know as a young wide player coming in, there'll be days when it'll be good for him, there'll be other days. I thought today he was a problem for them at different times. Obviously his finish was very good for us when we needed it. So he'll get better, he'll get more game time, he'll play more Premier League games and hopefully he'll continue to improve.

The main feeling was that we didn't know enough about him since we've had him in, so we haven't had much chance to get to know him, understand him. We were going to keep Jimmy (Garner) at right back, but he cramped up just as we made a change which caused us a problem regarding the subs. But it was a brilliant goal, great finish, really was brilliantly struck, and so pleased for him. It's a good start for him and it will help him with the crowd and get settled in as well.

I don't know if we're talking about what our ambitions are at the moment but behind the screens we're bartering away at the players to keep playing well and performing well and they certainly did. They've got a great hunger about them and hopefully we can keep it going. We'll wait and see but we'd have liked three points today. I was desperate to win it but in the end I was happy with a draw because it looked like we weren't going to get anything.

I would just say that we were just a little bit, let's say a lot, unlucky. It's just the games that happens sometimes you know, and it's important how you face that, what you learnt from it and trying to get better the next match.

It’s been a determined display from David Moyes’s side and you have to say they were good value for a point. However, United will be kicking themselves that they didn’t see this one out after leading twice.

It felt like a win. We dug deep and managed to get a point in the end. We fought until the death, and that's what happens.

It's amazing. Everyone wants to start off like that. The ball fell for me right on the edge of the box and I put it into the top corner.

I came in to work hard and it's a team full of hard workers so I fit right in. I can show that I'll pull my weight and give as much as everyone else, if not a tiny bit more.
