Sir Jim Ratcliffe must be a bright man but when he ventures into the football arena, it sometimes appears he is doing his best to hide it. When he talked about things that are 'on the slide' last week, he surely realised it was going to get applied to the football club he part-owns, too. He might as well have stood next to a door with an 'Exit' sign above it.

Gary Neville pulled no punches when tearing into Manchester United post-game on Sky Sports.

He said: 'I've never seen a Manchester United team walk as much as that. Michael (Carrick) needs to stop defending them.

'Both teams were the same. They were absolutely mannequins. I've never seen a Manchester United team walk around for 15 minutes like that. No alertness, just walking. Fulham had 46 passes in the first couple of minutes of the game to get a chance.

'I wish he could play the attacking players, but they'll kill him defensively.

'You've got five or six players who are better with the ball than without the ball. There needs to be a reset in terms of structure. They don't want to do the ugly part of the game.

'I rarely say teams don't make an effort because that's the ultimate criticism. That first 15 minutes of the second half, and generally the first 60 minutes, United were an absolute disgrace.'

Michael Carrick insists that Manchester United deserved to beat Fulham and that they have plenty of positives to take.

'We should have won the game, we created enough. We had a lot of good play. The goal that we did concede is one of them goals,' he told Sky Sports.

'The boys could've thought it was one of those days and that it went against us, but I really liked he reaction. We nearly won it at the end.

'We came to get the win, the way the game has panned out and the reaction is the positive we take from it.

'Their goalkeeper, the saves that he's made, he's made three top saves, arguably man of the match. That tells you how much we worked him. We hit the post twice and had a lot of opportunities. There's things to take from it.

'I don't think we were (passive). Do you think we were passive?'

(Reporter points out that United didn't have any shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half): 'That doesn't mean we were passive. It's the Premier League, you're going to have spells where you don't have it all your own way.'

Are you happy with the energy levels? 'Yeah.'

He added: 'We can take a lot and learn a lot from today. We need to be better and we will be.'

'We were so close and a little bit unlucky again. We knew what happened last week and we can see what the referee was doing in all the matches,' he told Sky Sports.

'All the fouls for them, and before they score, the foul from Maguire, a guy that is 100 kilos. They don't like to let Manchester United lose here.

'I prefer to focus on what we did well, how we worked and defended well, and had chances that we couldn't score. They had their chances also. We were so close to our first victory that we are a little bit upset now.'

Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno - who won man of the match with five saves - has put his weight behind Alvaro Arbeloa, though he did hesitate somewhat before speaking.

He told Sky Sports: 'The team is alive and fighting and running. You can see the structure and organisation of how we play. That's a positive.

'The manager with a new philosophy, wins will come.'

Would United have won today if they came up against a worse goalkeeper?

Five points is Manchester United's lowest tally after five games since 2014-15. Not good reading.

On the plus side, they did finish fourth that season with 70 points. But that's not what they want!

Fulham ran six kilometres MORE than Manchester United today. That's not far off having an extra player.

Ashley Young has taken a dim view of the Red Devils' work ethic.

He told Sky Sports: 'That's not acceptable. I'm sure Michael Carrick won't be accepting that.

'There were positives in this game when they played quick and put Fulham on the back foot. but when you create those chances, you've got to finish them off.'

Manchester United's saviour today, a downcast Matheus Cunha has been speaking to Sky Sports.

'So frustrated for us. I feel like in the begining we put the plan in, created some chances, didn't score, unlucky. They scored in one action that's hard to explain, a lot of luck,' he said.

'We came back and I'm frustrated. After the goal, we played with a lot of courage and character and enthusiasm. This needs to be from the start.

'We always play better after conceding a goal. It cannot be like this.

'We need to improve in every single position.'

By the way, how on earth did Manchester United have 29 shots? They were lifeless today.

Arbeloa looked a broken man at the end of that game and I'm not exaggerating.

Fulham are winless and have thrown away five points from winning positions. They've always been in games, and performed decently enough. Playing Chelsea, Liverpool, and Man United in your first five is a tough gig on paper.

Many tipped Fulham to struggle this season and unfortunately they've not done enough to overturn that perception. They go into the international break in 19th.
