In what has become an every set tradition, Mark Rosewater has shared a teaser for what players can expect to see in Magic: The Gathering Star Trek. These teasers are always partial information and share hints of mechanics, names, creature types, and more.
With over 20 years playing Magic, and having watched basically every live action Star Trek production and spent too much time thinking about things in that universe, Let's break down Mark Rosewater's Star Trek teaser and see what is coming to us from the Federation and other denizens of the Star Trek universe.
There are only a few options here for Star Trek ships. The first hat comes to mind is the USS Constellation, which would match the Constellation mechanic which focuses on enchantments - an odd mechanical fit, and its not a particularly notable ship. USS Discovery is pretty close to the Discover mechanic, and the fact that discover is inside discovery might make it fit. The USS Valiant (the ship that was crewed by cadets), would also work with the Valiant mechanic.
This seems likely to be spacecraft, a type that premiered in Edge of Eternities, and has already shown to be used to represent Star Trek ships.
This is almost certainly related to the card name in the teaser Kobayashi Maru Scenario, the no-win scenario test that was famously revealed in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, with Kirk cheating it.
No confirmation that Ensign Kim will be unable to have promotion counters placed on him has been confirmed at this time.
Wishes premiered originally in Odyssey block, and have occasionally reappeared since. They all let you get subsets of cards from outside the game, with the most extensive use being with Strixhaven's Learn mechanic.
After that came some rules text snippets:
Officer is a creature type premiering in Magic: The Gathering Star Trek, being used for a variety of characters based on what has been revealed.
This feels likely to be tied to a ferengi, given their love of holding onto valuables.
This is going to be a clone type of card, but the mechanic of changeling almost certainly means it will be representing a Shapeshifter or Changeling, one of the leaders of the Dominion, who were prominent in Deep Space Nine.
Following that are some creature types from the set:
This is likely one of the Pah-Wraith, an opponent of the Bajoran gods, the Prophets, who are antagonists later in Deep Space Nine.
There are a number of Vulcans it could be, but it seems most likely to be Spock's father, Sarek, who served as a diplomat for the Federation.
This feels most likely to be the leader of the Ferengi, the Grand Nagus. There are a few we see, particularly in Deep Space Nine, but the main one seen is Zek, and that would seem to be likely teased here.
This is going to be Odo from Deep Space Nine, as he is a Changeling, and a detective.
Ooze's aren't common in Star Trek, but there is one particularly notable Ooze type legendary creature. Armus was a black oil-like substance who in the Star Trek The Next Generation episode Skin of Evil killed the Enterprise's security officer Tasha Yar.
While Tasha died there, due to time travel shenanigans in the episode Yesterday's Enterprise, in an alternate time line she went on the Enterprise-C in the past, where she ended up as a Romulan captive. There, she eventually had a child with her captor, who would in the present menace the Enterprise-D and E captained by Jean-Luc Picard. Called Sela, she was a military leader in the Romulan Empire, and key in their efforts to destabilize both the Federation and the Klingnon Empire.
This is almost certainly Data's 'brother' Lore who is an ongoing antagonist of the Enterprise, and Data in particular.
Finally, we have some card names in the set:
As mentioned above, this is the name of the No Win Scenario that is used by Starfleet as a test of cadets to see how they react when there is no good options.
This is the famous Vulcan phrase used.
There are saga's in the set named after episodes, and The Measure of a Man is a season 2 episode of The Next Generation, where Data's rights are adjudicated before an impromptu court, with Picard representing Data, and Riker forced to represent Bruce Maddox. In the end it is determined that Data is Sapient and can't be forced to be Maddox's labrat.
The rules of acquisition are the rules that guide Ferengi society, and are all about acquiring wealth. They are essentially holy documents to the hyper-capitalist Ferengi.
Captain Picard's favorite drink.
An episode staple, which happens in many cases of technology going awry.
The signature Vulcan psychic ability to share minds or interrogate information.
And that's all! We have more information coming next week, as the Twitch/Youtube debut for the set will be on October 20th at 1PM Eastern.
