Agree completely. The math is the easy part. A few things that have helped on small calculators I’ve worked on:
Start from the question the user is trying to answer (“how many tonnes do I order?”), not from the formula’s inputs. Show that answer large, with secondary numbers below it.
Ask for 3–4 inputs, prefill sensible defaults for everything else, and put the defaults under an “Assumptions” toggle that shows the values being used. People in an industry trust a tool more when they can see the assumptions and change them.
Use the units they actually use on site, and let them switch between metric and imperial without losing what they typed.
Make results shareable: a URL with parameters, or a simple printable summary. Estimates usually get sent to a boss or a client.
Log which advanced fields people actually change. If nobody touches one in a month, it probably doesn’t need to be visible.
A clean interface with clear assumptions usually beats a feature-packed one.
