The desktop on my Mac is a mess. File and folder icons look like they’re strewn everywhere (I swear there’s a method to the madness). I put stuff on my desktop for quick and easy access to things I’m currently working on, but it’s not only unsightly, but it’s also a pain when I need to take a screenshot, which happens often.
Terkel Gjervig seems to have the solution to my desktop problem. Gjervig posted a video of his latest project, Desktop Cleaning, a Mac utility that does what I need when I want a clean-looking desktop. It uses a virtual rug to cover it all.

Okay, yeah, it’s a silly idea and doesn’t really address the real problem, which is my personal method of file management. But look beyond that, and the execution looks impressive. When the rug is clicked and dragged, it moves naturally. It looks cool. And it does exactly what it says it does.
Gjervig initially posted this as an idea, but the response was so positive that it’s going to be released, along with “other weird ways to maintain your desktop.” What that means, I don’t know, but I’m on board. You can too by signing up to get notified at Desktop Cleaning.
