40 years ago, author Ann M. Martin began writing the iconic Baby-sitters Club.
I was in for a treat when I visited the Scholastic office to meet Ann for a 40th-anniversary chat.
Before chatting with Ann, I was treated to a tour of their incredible collection of BSC history.
One of my favorite items was an original Scholastic catalog from Fall 1986 promoting the first book in the series.
After the tour, Ann and her longtime editor, David Levithan, joined us.
The Baby-sitters Club was originally supposed to be only four books.
Ann got to ride on the Baby-sitters Club float in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Ann wanted the books to tackle difficult topics in a way that would resonate with her audience.
David Levithan was a 19-year-old Scholastic intern when he first began working on the BSC.
David helped create a Baby-sitters Club villain named after his best friend.
Kristy and Mary Anne were the characters whose voices came most naturally to Ann.
Ann could see Stoneybrook and its residents very clearly in her head — and it became an actual map.
Some memorable plotlines were inspired by classic novels — though there was one idea they agreed never to explore.
Ann and David love that The Baby-sitters Club has resonated across generations.
Ann hopes readers carry the kindness and acceptance of the BSC with them
Thank you, Ann, David, and the Scholastic team for decades of babysitting magic, and for such a fun 40th-anniversary celebration!
