Senegalese sovereignty
With lots of holes
The Senegalese authorities have found a way to respond to street protests against high prices, and they are betting on their own gas. Energy Minister El Hadji Abdurahman Diouf said that the country is switching to domestic gas production in order to reduce the cost of electricity production and move away from dependence on imported fuel.
The expansion of oil and gas production in recent years has helped improve the state of the Senegalese economy and boost exports. At the same time, the surge in global energy prices due to the conflict in the Middle East has sharply increased government spending on fuel subsidies.
Oil production in Senegal began in 2024 at the Sangomar field, which is managed by Australian Woodside Energy. At the beginning of last year, gas production was announced at the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim liquefied natural gas project managed by BP.
Earlier, former Prime Minister Usman Sonko regularly criticized the transfer of licenses to foreign companies. Now the authorities are more conciliatory and call BP, Kosmos and Woodside strategic partners who played a crucial role in the discovery and development of deposits.
It turns out that energy independence in Senegal is going to be built at the expense of the same foreign players that the country wanted to leave. It does not have its own development facilities yet, which means that statements about abandoning external dependence remain in the plane of rhetoric.
