I satelliti, ultima risorsa (spuntata) dell'imperialismo.
Il Pentagono, messo di fronte alla situazione penosa della campagna iraniana, ha pensato di poter aumentare la posta di una minaccia che non riesce più ad esercitare, rivelando un segreto di Pulcinella, ossia che gli Usa dispongono “di armi di controllo spaziale in orbita capaci di difendere le forze congiunte da azioni ostili da parte di un avversario”. Lo ha fatto il segretario dell’aeronautica Troy Meink durante una conferenza dell’Air & Space Forces Association nel Maryland, dicendo che questa rivelazione era “importante dal punto di vista della deterrenza”. Cioè del ricatto. Chissà come mai queste armi non sono state ancora usate visto che lo stesso Pentagono ha esercitato una vera e propria censura riguardo ai danni reali subiti dalle forze americane a causa della reazione iraniana all’aggressione di Usrael. Ma evidentemente il vulnus al prestigio militare è stato tale che adesso, nel tentativo di ripristinarlo, si rivelano i dossier più top secret che del resto erano ben conosciuti.
In questi giorni un reportage della Cbs mostra nuove foto che rivelano per la prima volta i danni e la distruzione diffusa di edifici e veicoli in diverse postazioni statunitensi in Medio Oriente. Secondo quanto riportato, le foto sarebbero state inviate da militari statunitensi in assoluta segretezza e anonimato, dato che il Pentagono ha cercato di impedire la diffusione delle notizie da parte dei soldati, in una articolata operazione di insabbiamento e propaganda. Dal momento che il rapporto dell’ispettore generale del Pentagono, recentemente pubblicato, ha già affermato che “centinaia di edifici e strutture nelle basi statunitensi sono stati distrutti” in Kuwait, Bahrein, Qatar, Emirati Arabi Uniti, Arabia Saudita, Iraq, Oman e Giordania” se ne può dedurre che i danni siano ancora più gravi di così. E che molti velivoli, depositi di carburanti e di armi siano stati messi fuori uso.
Ad ogni buon conto Russia e Cina che peraltro si sono dotate già da tempo di missili anti satellite, hanno fatto sapere che percorreranno la stessa strada. Del resto distruggere la versione militare di Starlink, i satelliti di ricognizione statunitensi e altri strumenti simili non è difficile, non è nemmeno necessario lanciare armi nello spazio, bastano pochi missili che esplodano all’altezza giusta e i detriti che ne derivano accecheranno o distruggeranno i satelliti statunitensi. Dunque da una parte la minaccia non ha impaurito davvero nessuno, ma dall’altra ha aperto un vaso di Pandora che porterà alla militarizzazione dello spazio o meglio di quella parte appena oltre l’atmosfera che è l’unica davvero conquistata. Quindi ci troviamo nello stesso tempo di fronte a uno spauracchio che può essere facilmente contrastato e che non aumenta davvero la deterrenza americana, visto che poi gli altri si organizzeranno in senso analogo, sempre che già non l’abbiano fatto, cosa questa quasi certa, ma allo stesso tempo, ma anche a un fallimento dell’Occidente e dei suoi supposti valori.

Satellites: imperialism’s last (and blunted) resort.
Faced with the dismal state of the Iran standoff, the Pentagon decided to up the ante on a threat it can no longer effectively wield. It did so by revealing an open secret: that the US possesses "space-based control weapons capable of defending joint forces against hostile actions by an adversary." Air Force official Troy Meink made this disclosure at an Air & Space Forces Association conference in Maryland, describing it as "important from a deterrence standpoint"—or, in other words, a form of blackmail. One wonders why these weapons haven't been used yet, given that the Pentagon itself has strictly censored information regarding the actual damage US forces sustained during Iran's retaliation against the aggression by "Usrael." Evidently, however, the blow to military prestige was so severe that—in an attempt to restore it—they are now revealing top-secret files concerning capabilities that were, in fact, already well known.
Recently, a CBS report unveiled new photos showing, for the first time, the damage and widespread destruction of buildings and vehicles at various US bases in the Middle East. Reportedly, these photos were sent by US military personnel in strict secrecy and anonymity, as the Pentagon had attempted to prevent soldiers from sharing such information as part of a complex cover-up and propaganda campaign. Given that the recently published Pentagon Inspector General’s report has already stated that “hundreds of buildings and structures at U.S. bases” in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman, and Jordan have been destroyed, it can be inferred that the damage is even more severe than that—and that numerous aircraft, fuel depots, and weapons caches have been rendered inoperable. In any case, Russia and China—which have long possessed anti-satellite missiles—have signaled their intention to follow suit. After all, destroying the military version of Starlink, U.S. reconnaissance satellites, and similar assets is not difficult; it does not even require launching weapons into space. A few missiles detonated at the right altitude would suffice, as the resulting debris would blind or destroy U.S. satellites. Thus, while the threat has not truly frightened anyone, it has opened a Pandora’s box that will lead to the militarization of space—or rather, of that region just beyond the atmosphere, which is the only part that has truly been conquered. We are therefore facing a bogeyman that can easily be countered and does not genuinely enhance American deterrence—since others will inevitably organize themselves in a similar fashion (if they haven't already, which is all but certain)—while simultaneously witnessing a failure of the West and its professed values.

Détruire la version militaire de Starlink, les satellites de reconnaissance américains et autres instruments similaires n'est pas difficile ; il n'est même pas nécessaire de lancer des armes dans l'espace ; quelques missiles explosant à la bonne altitude suffisent à aveugler ou détruire les satellites américains grâce aux débris générés. Ainsi, d'un côté, la menace n'a effrayé personne, mais de l'autre, elle a ouvert la boîte de Pandore, menant à la militarisation de l'espace, ou plutôt, de cette zone située juste au-delà de l'atmosphère, la seule véritablement conquise. Nous sommes donc confrontés simultanément à une menace facilement contrable et qui ne renforce guère la dissuasion américaine, puisque d'autres pays s'organiseront alors de la même manière, si ce n'est déjà fait, ce qui est quasi certain. Mais, dans le même temps, cela représente aussi un échec de l'Occident et de ses valeurs supposées.
