FIFA is taking a second look at the Peace Prize it handed to President Donald Trump last December, with one of its committees now deciding whether the award should even exist going forward. The White House, however, is standing by Trump’s win.

In a new statement, a White House spokesperson insisted that Trump remains the most deserving recipient of the prize anywhere in the world, crediting his foreign policy with ending “eight wars” in less than a year.

FIFA Revisits Peace Prize

FIFA introduced the Peace Prize last November, saying the award would recognize “individuals who, through their unwavering commitment and their special actions, have helped to unite people all over the world in peace.”

FIFA president Gianni Infantino presented Trump with the first-ever edition of the prize at the World Cup draw in Washington, D.C., a month later. Trump described it as “truly one of the great honors of my life.”

The decision sparked pushback from some national federations, including Norway’s. Back in June, Norway Football Federation president Lise Klaveness said the federation had sent FIFA a letter backing a formal complaint over the prize.

Now, FIFA itself is reconsidering things. At a FIFA Council meeting in Zurich on Thursday, the council asked its Football Social Responsibility Committee to decide whether the Peace Prize will be handed out again and whether its criteria should be changed, according to Eli Kronenberg of Front Office Sports.

English Football Association president and FIFA Council member Debbie Hewitt told reporters that the committee will look at “whether there should have been [a prize], how the decision was taken to award it, and whether there should be another one.”

While FIFA might be reconsidering, the White House doesn’t see any reason for FIFA to have second thoughts on the prize.

“President Trump’s Peace through Strength foreign policy is a tried-and-true approach that keeps America safe and deters global threats that has already ended eight wars in less than a year,” White House spokesperson Davis Ingle told Front Office Sports.

“There is no one else in the world more deserving of FIFA’s first ever Peace Prize than President Trump,” Ingle added.

Of course, that defense comes with some obvious complications. Less than three months after Trump accepted the award, the U.S. and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran, which have since resulted in a broader regional conflict.

The timing of FIFA’s review isn’t great for Infantino, either. He’s running unopposed for a fourth and final term as FIFA president in March, but he’s also facing criticism from several federation leaders, with UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin calling for him to step down.
