The President of the republic of Singapore, the king of Sweden and the Crown Princess Couple gained insight into research on future energy systems during a visit to KTH.
Around 50 people visited KTH on the morning of 20 October. In addition to President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and the Swedish royals, the delegation included Minister for Energy, Business and Industry Ebba Busch and several business representatives. The visit was part of the President’s three-day state visit to Sweden.
KTH President Anders Söderholm welcomed the guests to KTH’s reactor hall and gave an introduction. Lisa Ericsson, Head of Department at KTH Innovation, then presented the organisation’s activities. Ebba Busch followed with remarks on reliable energy as a prerequisite for a competitive future.

Representatives from Studsvik, the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB), Siemens Energy, Hitachi Energy and the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority took part in a panel discussion on sustainable growth. The discussion focused on future energy systems and how nuclear technology, innovation and Swedish solutions can contribute to sustainable growth, greater resilience and a more secure energy supply.
The visit concluded with a presentation on fusion technology, a potential future energy source, by Novatron Fusion Group, which operates a test facility at KTH.
During the morning, KTH signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a school at the National University of Singapore (NUS).
“By combining KTH’s strengths in technology, innovation and industrial transformation with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy’s expertise in public policy and leadership development, we can translate technological advances into effective policies and lasting societal impact,” says Anders Söderholm.
Lisa Ericsson highlights the role of universities in translating research into innovation:
“Sweden and Singapore are two strong innovation nations, and technical universities like KTH have a key role to play in turning research into new businesses. By connecting our strengths, we can accelerate innovation and create impact far beyond our borders”.
