Apple TV debuts a new remake of thriller Cape Fear. This latest limited series adaptation is star-studded, with Amy Adams, Javier Bardem and Patrick Wilson headlining the cast.

Inspired by the 1991 movie, in Cape Fear, the world of a married couple of attorneys is turned upside down when a killer they helped convict is released from prison …

The new Cape Fear premieres on Apple TV today, June 4, with the first two episodes available to watch right now. Then, a new episode drops each week on the streaming service, culminating in the finale on July 31st.

Some may wonder whether this story is worth another adaptation. The high-profile 1991 Cape Fear movie (directed by Martin Scorsese) was itself based on the original Cape Fear film from 1962. The new Apple TV version is the first time the story has been brought to television.

While the basic structure of the story has been brought along for the ride, the Apple TV Cape Fear features modern settings and plot lines, including modern technology like phones, and a true crime podcast. But the essence is the same: a mentally unstable killer is out of prison, and ready to terrorize the people that helped incarcerate him.

Critical reviews for the series have been generally positive, with Javier Bardem’s manic portrayal of the unhinged Max described as a standout. It currently holds a 73% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
