A 10-year-old girl has been hospitalized after her younger brother threw a knife at her during a heated argument over pizza in Florida, according to police.

The children's mother reported to authorities that her daughter was injured by her eight-year-old brother around 3.30pm in Lauderhill, Broward County on Thursday.

Lauderhill Police Department responded to the call and rushed to the apartment complex on 2900 block of Northwest 56th Avenue, around eight miles north of downtown Fort Lauderdale. 

At this time, the identity of the girl has not been released. 

According to authorities, the young girl said she was cutting a pizza before her brother became visibly upset. 

She said the boy was angry he did not receive his slice of pizza before grabbing a knife.

The boy threw the knife directly at her, striking her in the chest.

The children's mother told Lauderhill police officers she stepped outside to retrieve the mail. 

When she returned, the young girl was running out of the apartment and bleeding from her chest wound.

According to fire rescue officials who arrived at the scene, the girl was conscious and breathing before being transported to Broward Health Medical Center. 

Officials said she suffered a small cut to her chest and has been hospitalized for her injuries. 

The police confirmed they have been in contact with all parties involved in the incident as their investigation remains ongoing.
