NetApp ONTAP over FC: thin provisioning, snapshots and space reclamation in HPE VM Ess

Дата публикации: 23-10-2026 20:32:49

We are evaluating HPE Morpheus VM Essentials with NetApp ONTAP storage over Fibre Channel. Our current reference is VMware with VMFS datastores and thin-provisioned VMDKs. Storage efficiency is an important consideration because we want to reuse customers’ existing storage capacity. We installed HVM using HPE_HVM_Install_24.04_S5Q83-11092.iso and Manager using HPE_Morpheus_Manager_SW_image_v9.1.0-1_S5Q83-11089.iso, but could not add the FC datastore to a single-host cluster. Can we test this configuration with one HVM host? Is there a supported single-node procedure for FC storage, or are two hosts plus a witness required from the start? If a single-host test is not possible, we would appreciate clarification on the following:Thin provisioning: With a 200 GB virtual disk containing 30 GB of written data, how much capacity is reserved and actually consumed in the datastore versus on ONTAP? Which settings are required on each side? Can the combined virtual disk capacities exceed the datastore capacity?VM snapshots: On a standard FC/GFS2 datastore, do snapshots use growing qcow2 overlay files, or do they reserve the full virtual disk capacity? Can snapshots be created and deleted/consolidated while the VM is running? How much additional free space is required during consolidation?ONTAP snapshots: Is there native integration for creating and restoring ONTAP snapshots, or are these managed separately? How would you recover one VM when the same LUN contains disks belonging to multiple VMs?Space reclamation: After deleting files inside a Windows or Linux guest, how is space reclaimed through the virtual disk, datastore and ONTAP LUN? Which TRIM/discard/UNMAP settings are needed? What happens automatically, and what requires scheduled or manual actions? How do active VM and ONTAP snapshots affect reclamation?Migration and VMware comparison: Are disks kept thin-provisioned after VMware migration and Veeam restore? Are there differences from VMware thin VMDKs that require more datastore capacity or more free working space for snapshots and consolidation?Pointers to supported configurations, recommended settings and documentation would be appreciated, especially practical experience with NetApp ONTAP over FC.
