The Federal Emergency Management Agency said it has launched a new tool for residents to buy flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program.

Available, at floodsmart.gov, the online option is available to residents living in the almost 22,700 NFIP communities across the country.

“We are making it easier for people to reduce their financial risk and protect what they’ve spent their lives building,” said FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton, in a statement on Oct. 20. “With this new digital tool, you can get a quote and buy a flood insurance policy in a matter of minutes.”

Homeowners can get a free quote after entering information such as address, foundation type, construction type, elevation, and location of HVAC systems. Customers can purchase online or take the quote to an agent. The portal can provide contact information for three licensed insurance agents in the customer’s state.

Flood damage is not covered by standard homeowners and renters insurance policies. Homeowners with federally backed mortgages who live in a designated flood zone are required to buy flood insurance. Coverage is available from the NFIP, administered by FEMA, as well as from the providers in the private insurance market.

NFIP provides coverage for up to $250,000 for the home structure and $100,000 for personal possessions.

According to a recent report from the Government Accountability Office, 86% of at-risk properties do not have NFIP coverage as of April 2026. The number of NFIP policies declined from 5.5 million in 2010 to 4.5 million in 2026, with the private market offsetting some of the decline. The GOA said many properties remain at-risk because FEMA’s flood zones do not account for all flood risks, such as from heavy rainfall.
