Over the last few years, sheer dressing has slipped off designer runways and onto every red carpet. At the London Fashion Awards this week, Sienna Miller, Louise Redknapp and Lily Allen were among the fashionistas who floated in wearing whisper-thin gowns that suggested underwear is the new outerwear. The message was clear: the see-through trend, at least for celebs, isn’t going anywhere.
But for the rest of us – normal people who enjoy feeling both festive and clothed – the idea of stepping out in something translucent is enough to induce a full-on meltdown. Yes, sheer looks magical on a red carpet, under perfect lighting, with a team of stylists on standby to avoid any unfortunate mishaps. Sadly, however, most office parties do not come with either flattering spotlights or a wind machine. Or an HR manager happy with you flashing your knickers.
The good news? There are plenty of ways to nod to the trend without actually wandering around in what feels like your underwear. Think cleverly lined mesh, sequin-scattered tulles, chic panelling and slips that do the heavy lifting. In other words: you can embrace the sheer moment stylishly, sensibly and without sacrificing your modesty – or your job – this Christmas party season.
Look 1:Nobody's Child White Lace Midi Skirt
A lace layered skirt is the perfect way to try the sheer trend - it shows off your legs, but provides more coverage than traditional 'sheer' materials which means you feel sexy, not naked! For post-work drinks, pair with an oversized cream jumper, black heels and a trending black pouch bag. Your friends will be seriously impressed.
Massimo Dutti Sequinned Blouse with Cowl Neck
This Massimo Dutti transparent vest is the perfect party piece, and you can tailor it to different transparencies depending on what you wear underneath. Our inclination? A nude body suit, black jeans and a leather studded bag. Very chic.
If you want a statement look this festive season, this Ba&sh dress is a total head-turner. We love the clever use of polka dots to add extra coverage, and the panel detail on the skirt, adding extra drama. Claudia Winkleman, who?
This sheer blouse features a removable lining, so you can choose how much you want to bear. The boho style and mocha shade are perfectly on-trend for 2026 - pair with chocolate brown jeans (velvet or corduroy feel particularly festive) and boots for an easy day-to-night outfit.
This skirt is a super festive take on the sheer trend, given the diamante detailing. Opt for sparkly shoes and a plain vest, bodysuit or tee, and top with a jumper for all-day wear.
