Microsoft is developing a seamless update system for Microsoft Edge that moves the browser to a newer version while users keep working, without a restart prompt, according to a post on the Microsoft Edge Blog. The feature exists only as an early prototype. It is not in production code and is not part of Chromium today, but Microsoft also detailed two update options that Edge users and administrators can use now.

Microsoft describes the goal as closing the "patch gap," the time between a security fix becoming available and actually being applied on a device. The company cites its 2026 Microsoft Digital Defense Report, which says AI is speeding up both attacks and vulnerability discovery.

In the prototype, Edge downloads the new version in the background. The browser, its supporting processes, and open tabs then transition to the new version. Microsoft's demo shows a long web form that stays open with the user's data intact during the switch.

The demo still starts with a click on the Update button, but Microsoft says the stated aim is that users would not need to click at all. Updates could then be applied within minutes of becoming available. According to the post's illustration, existing tabs keep running only when the old and new versions are compatible, and they adopt the new version after the next navigation.

Edge is also not tied to the Chromium release schedule for urgent fixes. Microsoft says it has already shipped Edge security patches independently when customers needed protection sooner. The Chromium schedule is what drives regular releases such as Chrome 155 with 247 security fixes.

The first option is Restart to update on idle, previously called Instant Updates. It is an opt-in setting that relaunches Edge when the device is idle, applies the pending update, and restores open tabs.

A restart still happens, but at a time when the user is not working. Microsoft says this can deliver the latest protection in hours instead of days. Details are in the Microsoft support article "Automatically update Microsoft Edge when your device is idle."

The second option, Security Update Alerts, is aimed at administrators of managed Windows devices and comes at no additional licensing cost. Admins can set it up in the Edge management service:

1. Open the Monitoring dashboard in the Edge management service.
2. Set a minimum severity threshold for security alerts.
3. Review dashboard alerts and email notifications when a new Edge release contains fixes at or above that level, including releases that address zero-day vulnerabilities.
4. Prompt users to restart, or configure automatic restarts when devices are idle, directly from the dashboard.

The dashboard also lists each release's severity, the CVEs it addresses, the number of managed Windows devices that may need the update, and the latest versions across Edge channels.

Microsoft has not announced when, or whether, seamless updates will move from prototype to a public Edge release.
