The first of several speed cameras will go live in Los Angeles beginning Monday, the city announced.
At the beginning of the work week, 20 automated speed cameras will snap pictures of vehicles traveling more than 10 miles over the speed limit. The city said the cameras, which are part of the Los Angeles Department of Transportation’s (LADOT) Speed Safety System pilot program, will only capture license plate information, not the faces of drivers.

Long Beach launches speed safety system citywide
The department added that the cameras cannot use facial recognition and confidential data cannot be shared with any law enforcement entities unless there is a court order. All images captured by the cameras that don’t result in a citation or violation are to be deleted within five days. Those that do result in a citation or violation can only be held for up to 60 days.
Vehicles detected traveling over the cameras’ speed limits will receive a warning in the first 60 days of their installation. After that, tickets will be distributed.
The cost of the fines is as follows:
$50 for speeds 11 to 15 mph over the limit.
$100 for speeds 16 to 25 mph over the limit.
$200 for speeds 26 to 99 mph over the limit.
$500 for speeds exceeding 100 mph over the limit.
“Speed safety systems are proven to reduce speeding and fatal crashes. Assembly Bill 645, signed into law in 2024, authorizes the City of Los Angeles, and five other cities, to pilot this technology at 125 locations,” LADOT said in a statement earlier this year. “As outlined in its report to the Los Angeles City Council (Council), LADOT prioritized locations on the City’s 2024 Priority Safety Corridors and used a safety scoring to identify the final 125 locations in collaboration with Council offices. Speed limit and “photo-enforced” signs will be installed at all locations.”
