When it comes to delivering edge-of-your-seat action, Jason Statham is a safe pair of hands. From Snatch to The Beekeeper and the Fast & Furious franchise, the 59-year-old actor has built a stellar career playing sharp, no-nonsense heroes thrust into high-stakes danger.

Now, his 2018 blockbuster sci-fi thriller, The Meg, has arrived on Netflix – and it's the perfect adrenaline rush for your next movie night.

Based on Steve Alten's 1997 book Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror, the story follows Jonas Taylor, a deep-sea rescue diver called back into action after a submersible is disabled by a terrifying 75-foot shark.

Helmed by Cool Runnings and National Treasure director Jon Turteltaub, the film raked in an impressive $529 million worldwide at the box office. Despite mixed critical reviews, fans have hailed the movie as a "must-watch".

The official synopsis reads: "A deep-sea submersible filled with an international research crew lies disabled at the bottom of the Pacific after having been attacked by a massive shark previously thought to be extinct. With time running out, expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao) to save the crew—and the ocean itself—from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon.

"What no one could have imagined is that years before, Taylor had encountered this same terrifying creature. Now he must risk his own life to save everyone trapped below...bringing him face to face once more with the greatest and largest predator of all time!"

Jason Statham leads the cast as Jonas Taylor.

He's joined by a star-studded cast, which includes Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson, Cliff Curtis, Ruby Rose, Masi Oka and Jessica McNamee.

The film was met with positive reviews from audiences, with one viewer describing it as "incredible," adding, "It has the best Jason Statham action scene ever."

A second viewer penned: "#TheMeg is fully aware of its own crazy nature, and has some pretty great surprises up its sleeve. The effects are rather incredible. I've loved suspenseful, gory, and over-the-top monster movies since I was a child, therefore #TheMeg was such a good time."

The Meg is streaming now on Netflix.
