Texas tax-free weekend starts August 7: What qualifies and what doesn't

Are you planning to shop the Texas tax-free holiday on Aug. 7–9?
NBC 5 Responds compiled a list of items you might not realize qualify for the sales tax exemption.
AVOID SURPRISES
Texas’ sales tax holiday on clothing, shoes, and school supplies runs Friday through Sunday.
The Texas Comptroller’s Office provides a full list of eligible products that are exempt from state and local sales tax, typically up to 8.25 percent. Shoppers are encouraged to review the list to confirm which items qualify.
Most clothing and footwear priced under $100 per item are tax-free. This includes school and employee uniforms, such as those worn by nurses, chefs, waitstaff, and first responders. Aprons and workout apparel are also exempt. Items like Halloween costumes, hosiery, bras, pajamas, and swimsuits also qualify.
Football jerseys under $100 are eligible for the exemption. However, sports gear such as football pads, pants, and helmets remains taxable.
“Don’t assume that it’s just the simple things because it is a broader range than people think,” said Acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock.
There is a price limit for qualifying items. While shoppers may spend more than $100 overall, each individual item must be under the $100 threshold. For instance, several pairs of sneakers priced at $99.99 each would be tax-free, but a single $100 pair would not qualify.
Diapers are included in the tax-free weekend, but in Texas, they are always exempt. Since 2023, products like diapers and menstrual supplies have been permanently tax-free statewide.

The sales tax holiday also applies to online purchases, even if the items arrive after the holiday ends.
Most retailers automatically apply the sales tax exemption at checkout for eligible items.
However, shoppers should be mindful that delivery, shipping, and handling fees count toward the price limit. For example, a $95 pair of jeans would be tax-free, but adding $5 in shipping would bring the total to $100, exceeding the threshold.
Customers should check the total sale price to confirm whether their purchase qualifies for the exemption.
