The queen of diplomatic hairdressing! Stylist reveals the hidden messages woven through Kate's flowing tresses

Her recent visit to Northern Ireland suggests she's mastered the art of diplomatic hairdressing as Kate, 44, joined the Prince of Wales for a special visit to Belfast this week.

The Princess of Wales is a seasoned diplomatic dresser, known to send messages of solidarity, friendship and strength through her clothes.

However, her recent visit to Northern Ireland suggests she's also mastered the art of diplomatic hairdressing as Kate, 44, joined the Prince of Wales for a special visit to Belfast this week.

In a nod to the country's heritage, the future Queen twisted her bronde tresses into a Celtic knot that proves Kate 'puts thought into the smallest details', according to celebrity hairstylist Tess Boyle.

'I think what is lovely about Kate is that she always seems to put thought into the smallest details, and her hair is no exception,' Ms Boyle, a senior stylist at Jo Hansford, told the Daily Mail.

It's a great example of 'how hair can make a statement without being too obvious,' she added.

Last week, the Princess travelled to south Belfast with Prince William, 44, for a series of engagements as part of the future King's Homewards initiative.

For the occasion, Kate paired an ivory ruffled blouse with a green checked skirt and matching accessories in a sartorial hat-tip to the host country – but she didn't stop there.

She picked a half-up, half-down hairstyle that was accentuated with the Celtic knot in a 'beautiful' gesture that felt especially fitting considering her honorary role as Colonel of the Irish Guards.

When the princess attended Irish Guards's St Patrick's Day Parade at Mons Barracks in March, her long locks were braided and skilfully pinned into an 'elegant' updo that was a nod to Irish folklore

'The Celtic knot is such a beautiful nod to Irish heritage, particularly as it represents loyalty, unity and lasting connections,' Ms Boyle continued, adding the style was also perfectly executed.

'There is quite a lot of detail in the weaving, but it still looks soft and elegant rather than too structured or overdone. That is something Kate gets right time and time again.'

Like when the princess attended Irish Guards's St Patrick's Day Parade at Mons Barracks in March.

From the Cartier shamrock brooch on loan to the princess from the regiment and glittering emerald earrings to the jade pillbox hat, her outfit was a masterclass in diplomatic dressing – but there was a meaningful message woven into her hair as well.

Her long locks were braided and skilfully pinned into an 'elegant' updo as stylist Leanne Jones noted whether it carried a 'sense of subtle storytelling'.

Like the Celtic knot, the braid could be 'interpreted as a nod to Irish heritage and Celtic folklore,' Ms Jones told Hello! magazine.

'The braided twist into a neat knot here is a particularly elegant touch, and I wonder if it brings a sense of subtle storytelling.

'Traditional hairstyles often featured intricate plaits symbolising status and identity,' she added, referring to Kate's considered chignon.

When she attended the St Patrick's Day parade in 2025, her knotted updo drew comparisons with the Celtic Trinity Knot

The style echoed the knotted updo when she made a triumphant return to the regiment's St Patrick's Day celebration in 2025 after announcing she is in remission from cancer.

The twisted bun drew comparisons with the Celtic Trinity Knot, also known as the Triquetra – an ancient Irish symbol that represents eternity and unity.

'Whether she chose it for its meaning or simply because she liked the look, I think it is a lovely example of how hair can make a statement without being too obvious,' Ms Boyle told the Daily Mail.

'What I find interesting is how she changes her hair depending on the occasion. For more formal engagements, she often wears it up in a beautiful, classic style, whereas for more relaxed occasions she tends to go for those lovely soft waves we all associate with her,' the expert continued.

Sometimes, Kate also appears to send more personal messages by making small changes to hair, Ms Boyle noted, highlighting the princess's lighter honey-blonde first seen in 2024.

Kate debuted the new colour during a joint engagement with Prince William at the Natural History Museum last September – a year after she confirmed she had completed her chemotherapy treatment in a moving video.

The visit marked Kate's return to royal duties after the summer holidays and the new hair colour was a dramatic departure from the deep chestnut hue typically associated with Kate.

But was there more to the transformation than a seasonal refresh? Ms Boyle seems to think so as she noted her clients typically want a change when they are entering a new chapter in their lives.

At the time, the Prince and Princess had just announced they were moving into Forest Lodge, their new forever home, after Kate's cancer recovery.

As the couple announced a move to Forest Lodge, their new forever home, her new hair colour was thought to symbolise renewal and a fresh start, particularly after recovering from her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy.

'I always think there is something about going a little lighter with your hair that makes you feel refreshed,' she explained. 'We see it in the salon all the time.

'Clients often want a change when they are entering a new chapter in their lives, and it does not necessarily have to be anything dramatic.

'Of course, we do not know whether Kate saw it as a fresh start herself, but I can certainly understand why people made that connection,' she added.

If it seems like Kate has only just discovered a knack for diplomatic hairdressing, consider her bridal do that broke a 350-year royal tradition.

Instead of a conventional knot, Kate wore her hair down in a move that some felt signalled the princess's legacy.

Her 'down do' suggested that Princess Kate would be a modern and less formal royal than her predecessors – but one only had to appreciate the weight of her diamond tiara – loaned by the late Queen – to appreciate this would not be at the cost of her duty.
