A surge in tick-borne alpha-gal syndrome cases on Martha’s Vineyard has raised the threat of anaphylactic shock.
It was like any other day for Megan Shai Brown, until her husband Michael was was stung by a wasp and went into anaphylactic shock while taking part in a benefit golf tournament.
“This completely came out of the blue,” Shai Brown recalls. “He didn’t have his own EpiPen because he had never had the need for it in the past and unfortunately, he passed away Oct. 15. 2023.”
Michael’s sudden death was devastating for Megan. Her two sons went through allergy testing, and while they came back negative for the wasp venom, Megan still chose to get EpiPen prescriptions for both as a precaution.

But now, three years after Michael’s death, she believes more action is needed to prevent similar situations from unfolding.
“We can’t change what happened to my husband, but we can try to save others from having the same tragedy happen in their families,” Shai Brown said.
She began advocating on Beacon Hill for businesses to have access to EpiPens and to be able to administer the life-saving medication without fear.
“This would make it so public venues like golf courses, restaurants, sporting arenas would be able to get EpiPens directly from wholesalers, and there’s built-in liability protections there,” State Rep. Thomas Moakley said.
The issue has gained added urgency in recent months. A surge in tick-borne alpha-gal syndrome cases on Martha’s Vineyard has raised the threat of anaphylactic shock.
“Often, someone who has alpha-gal, you don’t know you have it, and onset can be very sudden and dramatic, particularly after consuming red meat,” said State Sen. Julian Cyr, who represents the Cape and Islands.
The House passed the bill unanimously earlier this year, while the Senate has not taken up the legislation yet.
“A lot of moving pieces in the session, but certainly this is one of the things we’re pushing to get done,” Cyr said.
Shai Brown plans to keep pushing for passage as the end of the year nears.
“I just ask that we see this through,” she said.
