Trading card collectors have recently experienced a hiccup. A group of criminals pulled off a FedEx truck heist, stealing over $1 million worth of trading cards. PSA authenticated the value of the stolen cards. The company's owners have issued an official statement on the heist.
The PSA Response to the FedEx Truck HeistFor those not aware, in a report by Dexerto, a FedEx truck in Santa Ana, California, was robbed on October 13. According to a police report by the SAPD, more than 200 packages in the truck were worth about $1 million. The wrinkle is the truck was robbed while parked outside PSA headquarters.
The PSA is known for giving authentication and grading of various collectors' items, including vintage comic books and trading cards. If something rare has a PSA grade and is sealed, it carries an air of value and exclusivity. An official PSA statement confirmed that the cargo stolen included highly valuable, sought-after trading cards. As for how this heist would affect their customers' orders, Collectors, PSA's parent company, announced the following:
“We have deactivated the certificates for the stolen items and notified marketplace partners so they can be on the lookout for rare and serialized items,” Collectors said in a statement. “Our customer service team has contacted affected customers directly and is arranging compensation based on fair market value.
“We understand the impact this has on collectors involved, many of whom see these cards as far more than a financial asset. Our team is focused on supporting them.”
While not ideal, these actions do mean the thieves will struggle to resell their stolen goods on various official storefronts. As for "fair market value," that can vary based on many factors within the TCG space. Before Post Malone officially got hold of the single copy of The One Ring card, complete with rules text in Black Speech, as part of a Universes Beyond Magic: The Gathering set, it was valued anywhere between $1 and $2 million.
As for the statement about how people see cards as more than financial assets, a thread on the PSA grading subreddit corroborates this. Users have posted images of cards that were affected by the heist, including extremely rare copies of Smaug, the Magnificent from the MTG: Hobbit set, and a serialized Grand Master Rare of a Dark Magic Curtain card from Yu-Gi-Oh.
