Anyone who has spent time tinkering with modern frame generation technologies on PC knows the biggest catch is almost always input lag. Because standard frame interpolation has to wait for the graphics card to finish rendering two real frames before it can calculate and slot a generated frame in between them, you inevitably take a hit to responsiveness. However, a newly published patent from Sony Interactive Entertainment suggests the PlayStation maker is looking at a clever way around this bottleneck by factoring in your physical controller inputs to predict future frames before the GPU even finishes drawing them. Anything to cut latency is great for gamers, as it seems frame gen is a technology that isn’t going away any time soon.
The US patent application was published on 15 October 2026 and builds upon an earlier filing originally submitted back in December 2023 by Sony engineer Denis Dupeyron. Dubbed Generation Super Sampling, the system moves away from traditional frame interpolation and toward predictive frame extrapolation. Instead of holding back a completed frame to see what happens next, the system attempts to guess what the upcoming frame will look like and pushes it to the display whilst the GPU is still busy rendering the actual frame in the background.
To pull this off, Sony outlines an encoder-decoder neural network architecture. The encoder takes an already rendered frame and compresses its visual data into a compact format. From there, the decoder steps in to predict one or more future frames by combining that image data with in-game motion vectors and live controller inputs from the player. By reading button presses and analogue stick movements the moment they happen, the neural network can anticipate camera pans or character movement before those actions have even been processed into a finished frame by the graphics hardware.
Interestingly, the patent also details a fallback method that does not rely on an AI neural network at all. In scenarios where neural processing might not be used, the system can still predict movement by shifting blocks of pixels across the screen based on existing motion vector data.
While a patent filing never guarantees a feature will make it into retail hardware, the documentation gives us a clear look at how Sony is tackling the latency problem ahead of the inevitable PlayStation 6 generation.
Predictive RenderingSony has already dipped its toes into machine learning graphics tools with PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on the PS5 Pro, which handles AI-driven resolution upscaling. Adding a dedicated, low-latency frame generation suite would be the natural next step for Sony’s custom silicon strategy. Of course, the patent does not include any benchmarks, latency measurements, or visual quality comparisons, it remains to be seen how well predictive frame generation handles sudden, erratic player movements without introducing visual artefacts. Still, if Sony can get Generation Super Sampling working reliably, it could play a major role in helping a future PlayStation 6 hit high frame rates without sacrificing the snappy controller response gamers expect.
