The use of artificial intelligence to solve problems in video games has just taken a significant step forward. The modder known as LTSharpe has released a modification for The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Remastered that increases the game’s performance by an average of 37%.
The most interesting thing is that the code for this mod was written almost entirely using Claude, the language model developed by Anthropic.
Bethesda and Microsoft’s title has always faced considerable criticism for its PC optimization. Being a game that puts a heavy load on the processor and graphics card, it often suffers from frequent performance drops and stuttering. According to tests shared by the modder himself, his optimization manages to reduce stuttering, going from 66 detected stutters to just 11 during the same sequences.
Furthermore, the 1% low FPS, a key indicator of smoothness that measures the most severe frame rate drops, increased from 18 to 26 fps, representing a 44% improvement during the most demanding scenes. According to the developer, all of this was achieved without any loss of visual quality and without altering any of the textures.
The mod has already received a positive response from the community. Several users on GitHub and Nexus Mods have confirmed similar improvements, and one gamer with a Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor even reported up to a 50% performance gain (thanks OC3D).
Developing the tool took LTSharpe just two and a half weeks, using AI as its foundation. This contrasts sharply with the approach of Bethesda’s development team, which, more than a year after launch, has released very few updates focused on improving the game’s performance.
In other AI news, Xbox employee Brandon Stirrup claims every game developer uses AI and confirms Microsoft does too, sparking debate over AI in game development.
