what-even-is-thiss:The reason that flock cameras suck in comparison to other types of security cameras is that they’re a) centralized in their data collection and b) in a public space that people don’t really have much of a choice to avoidA store owner putting up a security camera is protecting their own private property and not connected to a singular database that has profiles on individuals. Their footage isn’t available to the government or the police unless they hand it over. You can also choose to not go to that location if you don’t want that particular store owner to have footage of you. Flock cameras are in the street which is supposed to be a space owned by everyone, they’re contracted by governments and police forces, and they have a centralized database with profiles on people. Even a lot of conservatives realize that this sort of thing sucks ass. Security camera footage of you going to 7/11 to get a big gulp at 3am is just between you and the people who run that 7/11. There’s no reason for the state or a large corporation to know about your 7/11 big gulp habits. That’s supposed to be between you, God, and the cashier. “If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to be afraid of” Well on the other side of that, if these devices aren’t for tracking random citizens, why keep profiles on random citizens? It’s surveillance. It’s clearly a tool of control and not of personal safety.
