John Anderson, the country Hall of Famer behind hits like “Seminole Wind” and “Swingin’,” has died. He was 71.

Anderson’s death was announced by his family across his social media accounts on Wednesday. No cause of death or further information was noted.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and best friend,” read the statement. “To the world, he was a gifted country music singer whose voice and songs touched countless lives. To us, he was so much more. He was the heart of our family, the one who made us laugh, loved us fiercely, and made every ordinary moment feel special.”

It continued: “We are completely heartbroken. His music will live on, but for us, his greatest legacy will always be the love he gave his family and the memories we will carry with us forever. Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers as we grieve this unimaginable loss.”

Over Anderson’s nearly five-decade career, he earned 20 Top Ten country hits, with five reaching the top spot on the charts — “Wild and Blue,” “Black Sheep” and “Swingin’” were among his most notable hits, as were “Straight Tequila Night,” “Money in the Bank” and “Seminole Wind.” From his first, the self-titled debut “John Anderson” in 1980, to his last, “Years,” released in 2020, the country singer released 22 studio albums.

Anderson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024 and previously into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014. He won the Academy of Country Music Career Achievement Award in 1993.

“John Anderson was a one-of-a-kind song stylist who proved that fresh innovations were best born from time-honored traditions,” said Kyle Young, CEO of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, in a statement. “Whether he borrowed inspiration from Lefty Frizzell’s vocal bends or the Florida swamp land, he brought dynamic distinction and creative soul to a world that needed to hear his voice. In 1981, John famously gave life to Billy Joe Shaver’s lyric, ‘I’m just an old chunk of coal, but I’ll be a diamond someday.’ He was already a diamond then, and a diamond he always will be.”

Anderson was born Dec. 13, 1954, in Orlando. He grew up in Apopka, Fla., and knew by age twelve that he wanted to pursue music. After graduating from high school, he moved to Nashville, began performing regularly, and ultimately signed a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records in 1976.

He is survived by his wife, Jamie, their two daughters, Alexa Kate and Brionna Cheri, and his grandchildren.
