Suffolk recently launched the “Suffolk Semester Sprint,” a new 10-week, hands-on mentorship and internship program in partnership with Florida International University (FIU) and its Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Student Chapter.
The program, which is the first of its kind at FIU, brings together 25 FIU juniors, seniors and graduate students for firsthand exposure to the people, skills and career paths driving today’s construction industry.
Over the course of the program, Suffolk leaders will give students firsthand exposure to:
• Project management and construction operations
• Safety
• Design and architecture
• Budgeting and scheduling
• Construction technology and AI tools
• Active construction sites
The program goes beyond the classroom. Students will visit a Suffolk job site to see construction operations in action and will work together on a real-world construction challenge as part of a capstone project, presenting their solutions to Suffolk executives at the conclusion of the program.
Among the mentors is Suffolk vice president of pperations Armando Diaz, a double degree graduate of FIU and recipient of the Torch Awards Charles E. Perry Young Alumni Visionary Award in 2018. Now, he’s returning to FIU to mentor the next generation.
The program comes at a timely moment for the industry, with October marking Careers in Construction Month and employers across South Florida working to attract and develop the next generation of construction talent. It also highlights how today’s construction industry offers far more career paths than many students may realize, spanning engineering, project management, technology and AI, data management, design, safety and other STEM-focused fields.
