Bengaluru: The Indian Institutes of Technology have decided not to cooperate with 22 companies on campus recruitments for the next two placement seasons for failing to honour offers made to students graduating in 2026.

The All IITs Placement Committee (AIPC), the central coordinating body for placement and internship guidelines across IITs, met at IIT-Guwahati earlier this month and decided to write to the companies by September 30, informing them about the decision. The panel will deliberately avoid terming the action as "blacklisting", and instead describe it as "non-cooperation".

The number of offers involved is more than 150 across 23 IITs, with some companies withdrawing 10-15 offers, AIPC convenor and IIT-Guwahati associate professor John Jose told ET. He declined to name the companies that reneged on offers.

Oracle, according to campus sources, has not honoured around 40 offers at IITs and is among the companies that would face non-cooperation for two years.

The US enterprise software company that cut thousands of jobs this year globally, including in India, did not reply to an email from ET seeking comment.

Oracle has not approached IITs for recruitment so far this year, Jose said.

The final list and the number of offers not honoured are expected to be collated by the committee after individual IITs report the latest status of the cases. Several startups are also on the list.

September 15 was the deadline that the AIPC set for companies to onboard students they had made offers to.

"We have made a decision that by September 30, we will write an email telling these companies that we are not going to be cooperating for recruitments for the next two years," said Jose.

Last year, IITs individually wrote to companies that failed to honour offers. This year, communication will go out from the AIPC as a body, said Jose. "Last year, about 10-11 companies had not honoured offers. This year's figure is the highest in recent years."

The AIPC is also trying to mitigate the impact on students whose offers were withdrawn. Placement offices at IITs have circulated the CVs of affected students to existing recruiters, asking them to consider these candidates for open positions.

Jose estimated that around 20-30% of such students found jobs through these cross-referrals. However, IIT placement offices do not have a complete picture of the number of affected students still seeking jobs as some may have found jobs independently off-campus or through their personal networks, without informing the institutes.

"Once students graduate, maintaining a complete record of their employment status becomes difficult," said Jose.

The AIPC's move is aimed not only at addressing the impact on students who have lost offers, but also at reinforcing the credibility of campus offers made through the IIT placement system.

The action comes as IITs enter another placement season against the backdrop of cautious technology hiring and uncertainty around entry-level recruitment.
