There’s no official Google playbook for getting into AI Overviews — the systems that generate them don’t publish submission criteria the way traditional search does. But based on how they work, the winning approach is to make your content the easiest, most trustworthy thing for an AI model to cite.
A few things that tend to move the needle:
Answer the question directly, early. AI Overviews favor pages that state a clear answer in the first paragraph or two, rather than burying it in fluff. If your page is built around a question, answer it plainly and immediately — then expand.
Use clean, semantic structure. Short paragraphs, descriptive H2/H3 headings, bullet lists, tables, and definitions all make your content easier for AI systems to parse and quote. They also help your featured-snippet chances, which often overlap with AI Overviews sources.
Add original data, stats, and expert commentary. AI models tend to cite pages that offer something unique — original research, specific numbers, expert opinions — rather than generic rehashes of the same advice.
Strengthen your E-E-A-T signals. Author bios with credentials, clear authorship, citations of sources, and strong internal links all signal trustworthiness. Google’s systems lean on pages they consider authoritative when generating AI answers.
Keep your technical SEO solid. Crawlable, indexable pages with clean markup, good Core Web Vitals, and correct schema (like FAQPage where relevant) remain the baseline. If the crawler can’t clearly understand your page, the generative layer won’t pick it either.
Aim to be citable. Getting your content referenced by other reputable sites increases the chance it becomes a trusted source across the web, which is exactly the kind of signal these systems look for.
One honest caveat: even doing all of this doesn’t guarantee a spot in AI Overviews, and citations there aren’t always attributed. Treat it as an extension of good holistic SEO rather than a separate hack.
