Firefighters battling the stubborn Henderson Fire at Camp Pendleton have increased containment to 100%, scorching 3,260 acres, according to Cal Fire.

Crews have continued working around the clock to extinguish remaining hot spots, secure the perimeter and mop up following days of intense suppression efforts. Favorable weather changes — including higher relative humidity and a shift to onshore winds — have aided containment progress after the fire initially prompted evacuations and temporary closures of Interstate 5, Cal Fire said.

Conditions were also favorable for firefighters working to contain the Norte Fire in San Clemente. As of Monday afternoon, it had burned nearly 600 acres and was 80% contained.

“In the last couple of days, we started to see that forecast change … shifting to more of an onshore breeze," said Sean Doran, a spokesperson for the Orange County Fire Authority. "Some slightly rising humidity. So we're using that to our advantage.”

The Henderson fire broke out shortly after 2:30 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Basilone and Las Pulgas roads, quickly advancing westward and threatening the freeway corridor. At the height of the emergency, authorities temporarily shut down traffic in both directions between Basilone and Harbor Drive as heavy flames burned near the highway.

The blaze destroyed one building on the Marine base, but swift intervention from hundreds of local, state and military personnel prevented further structural loss. At peak operations, more than 530 personnel, dozens of engines, bulldozers, water tenders and multiple firefighting air tankers were deployed to tackle the flames, according to the agency.

The San Diego County Incident Management Team assisted with command and coordination. No injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire remained under investigation.

Meanwhile in Orange County, the Norte Fire ignited in an open space area near Eminencia Del Sur and Portico Del Norte in San Clemente at around 11:33 a.m. on Friday, according to Cal Fire and the Orange County Fire Authority.

San Diego Gas and Electric’s Circuit 197 had a power line outage near the location at 11:31 a.m., the utility confirmed.

The cause of the fire and the outage have not been identified.

In an emailed statement, SDG&E said, “Smoke and ash from fires can cause electric outages and there is currently no basis to conclude that there is a connection between our facilities and the ignition.”

Cooler temperatures are expected to continue into the week. Some rain and thunderstorms are expected Wednesday and Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
