Hannaford was back online Tuesday morning, just over a week after the supermarket chain’s Dutch owner shut down its websites and apps in Europe and the U.S. because of a cybersecurity issue.

Ahold Delhaize disabled its online systems as a “precautionary measure” on Oct. 12 — the same day hackers disrupted refrigeration systems in supermarkets across France.

Hannaford said the “suspicious activity” detected by its parent company was unrelated to the cyberattacks on French grocery stores and that there is no evidence that any sensitive data was taken from its customers, associates or business partners.

“We know these services are an important part of how our customers shop with us, and we understand the inconvenience of not having them available,” spokesperson Caitlin Cortelyou said via email. “We’re grateful for our customers’ patience and understanding, and extend our sincere thanks to our associates for their dedication to serving customers while our teams worked to restore service.”

As a thank-you to customers, Cortelyou said Hannaford is offering all rewards customers $10 off their next purchase of $100 or more through Oct. 28.

Hannaford’s stores and pharmacies have remained open as normal amid the online shutdown.

Hannaford is familiar with cybersecurity issues. More than 95,000 Mainers and about 2.2 million people overall were affected by a data breach in November 2024 that compromised personal information of some current and former Hannaford employees and customers.

About 700 French supermarkets experienced widespread food loss and some fires on Oct. 12, when hackers forced refrigeration units into continuous defrost cycles and set temperatures as high as 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit), The Associated Press reported.

Ahold Delhaize announced the same day that it had taken “some systems offline to help protect them,” according to the company’s website. Although some Hannaford stores have recently experienced refrigeration problems, Cortelyou says the issues are not related.

Based in Scarborough, Hannaford operates 188 stores across the Northeast, including 68 in Maine; the company is the state’s second-largest employer, with about 9,500 workers.
