A Florida judge is set for public humiliation after breaking impartiality rules in four different ways during a campaign that secured her re-election by less than 1,000 votes.

Judge Jennifer Cruz Dubbeld was accused of misconduct after Florida's Judicial Qualifications Commission started an investigation over her campaign for the Pinellas-Pasco Circuit, which covers the state's central west coast near St. Petersburg. 

Dubbeld had already admitted to the violations at a hearing in 2025, the Tampa Bay Times reported. Now, she has to appear before the Supreme Court in Florida for a 'public reprimand' following a unanimous decision by all seven justices.

In one violation, Dubbeld was accused of disparaging an opponent in a Facebook post, in which she wrote: 'Actual courtroom experience matters, just as being straight forward and not misrepresenting qualifications (as some have done),' according to court filings.

Additionally, Dubbeld was cited for collecting donations at campaign events. She also admitted to passing around flyers that asked people to 'contribute to the Committee to elect Jenn Dubbeld,' with a QR code leading to a site that accepted financial contributions.

Dubbeld's campaign further included pictures of her with other candidates who had active opposition in political races, despite judicial candidates being obligated to stay non-partisan.

In another rule-break, the judge misleadingly used photos of public officials and lawmakers on her campaign website who did not endorse her.

Dubbeld's offenses came against the backdrop of a highly competitive general election in which she beat civil attorney Nick Fiorentino by less than 1,000 votes in a total of more than 600,000 votes.

Gregory Coleman, chair of the Florida Judicial Qualifications Commission, wrote in a report: 'Judge Dubbeld’s actions, and the actions of her campaign, violated Canon 7 in that they [misled] the public, raised an appearance of impropriety, and reflected poorly on judicial independence.'

The commission reviewing her case has recommended that Dubbeld should be publicly reprimanded by the Florida Supreme Court and suspended for 20 days without pay. 

A specific date for the judge's appearance in the Supreme Court is yet to be determined. 

Coleman wrote that Dubbeld 'expressed remorse and regrets that her actions have reflected poorly on judicial independence.'
