Parents of a disabled child are sounding the alarm after their son told them he was forced to clean the cafeteria tables after his classmates finished their lunch.
Jeremiah and Felicia Sams were shocked when their son, Will, told them he had been cleaning the cafeteria with other disabled students at Lakewood High School in Sumter, South Carolina, about three hours south of Charlotte.
Felicia shared the story on Facebook, adding that she reached out to the assistant principal immediately after her son told her he had been cleaning and was told the program was to teach the students in the disabled class how to work.
'He cleans at home!!!! He attends school to learn. Please, if you or anyone you know has a disabled child at LAKEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL please ask them,' she wrote.
'Do you want your child… because they have a disability to be forced to clean the trash and food off the floors and tables all because they are disabled!!! Shame on you Sumter Schools.'
Jeremiah told local NBC affiliate WIS that he thought he misheard his son when Will told them he had been cleaning up after the other high schoolers.
'My first reaction was something’s not right. No, I’m hearing this wrong. There’s no way that they have one group of children doing all of this,' he told the outlet.
The parents added that the school told them their son was in a 'work-study program,' but they denied enrolling Will in any employability classes.
Jeremiah and Felicia Sams said their son, Will, was clearing tables in his high school cafeteria as part of an 'employability class'
The parents accused Lakewood High School administrators in South Carolina of forcing students in the disabled class to clean up after their classmates at lunch
They said Will is on the autism spectrum and they claimed the only students participating in the cleaning were also in the disability class.
The concerned father wrote in a Facebook post that he was 'ashamed' he had not asked his son the right questions earlier in the school year.
'Is this part of the budget reconciliation effort??? Have the disabled children do janitorial duties for free to save hiring employees? WORTHLESS,' Jeremiah added.
He asked others to share the information online and urged other parents to ask their children what they are doing in school.
The Sumter School District told WIS in a statement that students enrolled in the 'employability class' are equipped with 'meaningful learning experiences that prepare them for life beyond high school.'
The syllabus includes clearing cafeteria tables, selling popcorn and slushies as classroom fundraisers and crafts.
The statement added that the activities were discussed during meetings with parents and guardians.
The district said that they would also be reviewing the course 'to ensure they support the goals of each student.'

'Sumter School District remains committed to working collaboratively with families to ensure students receive instruction and support that respect their individual needs and prepare them for success beyond the classroom,' the statement concluded.
Felicia and Jeremiah later said that they were told the program was ending. 'This is the first step in correcting a very old and ignored issue. Please keep sharing and commenting keep the momentum going. WE ARE THE CHANGE, it’s up to us!!!' Felicia wrote on Facebook.
Jeremiah told WIS that the decision was a positive step, but noted that he wanted to see the district take accountability.
The Daily Mail has reached out to the Sams' family and the district for additional comment.
