Few modern dating experiences are more frustrating than being ghosted.

But the horrible experience may come with a silver lining – as a study has found that people who vanish without explanation are often plagued by guilt.

Researchers have discovered that people who are ghosted consistently underestimate how guilty, embarrassed and remorseful the person ignoring them feels about the silence.

‘Although online communication platforms provide convenience, they also bring a risk of ghosting, when one person unexpectedly stops responding to another without explanation,’ they wrote in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.

‘Across three studies, we find that people who are ghosted underestimate how bad their conversation partners feel about ghosting them.

‘Overall, this research provides a window into the overlooked pain of ghosting others.’

Ghosting is the modern phenomenon of abruptly cutting off all communication with someone, usually by ignoring their messages and calls without offering any explanation.

This can lead to intense confusion and distress, as people are unsure whether the relationship is over or whether something terrible has happened to the person.

To investigate, the team, led by scientists from the universities of California and Cambridge, examined ghosting through three separate studies involving real-life experiences, imagined scenarios and live online interactions.

Across all three studies, they found that 'ghostees' tended to assume the person who had cut contact either did not care or had simply moved on.

But in reality, many 'ghosters' reported feeling bad about their behaviour and experienced feelings such as guilt, embarrassment and remorse.

The mismatch was particularly pronounced when the ghosting was unintentional, such as when someone forgot to reply, became distracted or delayed responding for too long.

The chart shows that ghosters (light bars) generally reported feeling worse about their silence than ghostees (dark bars) expected, suggesting many victims fail to appreciate the guilt felt by those who disappear

Researchers also found that even a brief message such as 'sorry, can't talk' helped reduce the emotional misunderstanding between the two sides.

The findings suggest that while being ignored can be deeply upsetting, those responsible for the disappearing act may not be escaping the emotional fallout themselves.

Previous surveys have shown that up to 80 per cent of single Brits have experienced being ghosted in romantic or dating contexts.

Meanwhile, two in five have been ghosted by friends or family members.
