Millions could face powerful hybrid cyclone off East Coast in just days, forecast models suggest

A powerful hybrid of a nor'easter and a tropical storm could form off the East Coast, in a setup meteorologists compared to the 1991 'Perfect Storm.'

Millions along the East Coast could face pounding surf and coastal flooding as forecast models suggest a powerful hybrid storm could develop offshore.

Initial coastal hazards are expected from North Carolina to Florida this weekend into early next week, even if no storm develops.

A powerful weather system is forecast to sweep from the Midwest to the East Coast on Friday, pushing a cold front toward the Atlantic by Saturday morning and bringing rain, gusty winds and falling temperatures.

If that front stalls near the Southeast coast, a storm could form offshore and linger over the Gulf Stream, drawing heat and moisture from its warm waters.

That could help it gain tropical characteristics or become a hybrid system combining features of a nor’easter and a tropical cyclone. Any tropical or subtropical development would most likely occur between October 19 and October 22, although the chance remains low.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said an offshore low could bring rain, locally heavy downpours and possible gusty winds to eastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia, depending on how close it gets to shore.

AccuWeather warns that a storm tracking northward near the coast could spread rain, strong winds, rough surf and coastal flooding toward the mid-Atlantic and New England later next week.

Meteorologist David Tolleris, who focuses on long-range weather forecasting, compared the potential setup to the conditions behind the 1991 'Perfect Storm,' saying that 'it looks like the atmosphere is trying to do something like that again.'

That storm absorbed energy from Hurricane Grace and later spawned an unnamed Category 1 hurricane.

Warm waters could supply heat and moisture, helping it develop into a hybrid system combining features of a coastal storm and a tropical cyclone

The ‘Perfect Storm’ developed in late October when a powerful Atlantic storm absorbed energy and moisture from Hurricane Grace, battering the East Coast with enormous waves, strong winds and coastal flooding.

It sank the fishing boat Andrea Gail, killing all six crew members, a tragedy later depicted in the book and movie The Perfect Storm.

In an unusual twist, a smaller cyclone developed within the larger system and strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane, but never received an official name.

AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva said in a statement: 'If the front stalls this weekend, a storm could gradually form along it.

'Warm Gulf Stream waters nearby could help it develop tropical or subtropical characteristics.'

Meteorologist Noah Bergren for FOX 35 Orlando, Florida said: 'Regardless of coastal storm or not, there is going to be some significant surf and wave action on the Carolina Beaches and especially Florida east coast beaches this weekend into early-mid next week.

'Offshore waters 12-25 feet, breaking waves 10' or so into Daytona Beach. A tad lower in Cocoa Beach from the angle of the wind and the Cape Canaveral blocking the waves. A lot of beach erosion coming next week.'

The European forecast model suggests a storm could develop off North Carolina around October 19 to 20, then struggle to move away as a large area of high pressure builds over the Great Lakes and Canada.

By October 23 to 24, the European model shows the system strengthening offshore.

Its central pressure falls from 990 to 984 millibars, a sign of intensification, although those numbers alone do not establish how strong its winds would become.

The question is whether it would remain a typical coastal storm, develop into a subtropical system with a mix of tropical and non-tropical features, or become fully tropical.

That uncertainty matters for coastal communities: a slow-moving storm could prolong strong winds, rough surf and coastal flooding if it remains close enough to shore.

Forecast models from Google DeepMind and Germany's weather service have shown similar scenarios.

Meteorologist Dr Ryan Maue posted on Substack: 'An interesting cut-off low develops off the US East Coast next week beneath a blocking ridge (omega block) and could find enough warm water to develop into a Subtropical / Tropical Storm — and stay out to sea. Something to watch!'
