Attorney Scott Settle, managing principal of the Settle Meyer law firm joins producer/host Coralie Chun Matayoshi to discuss new laws that focus not just on building more units, but keeping affordable housing and rental units available for local residents, improving the permitting process, help for first time home buyers, incentives to build rental housing for the “missing middle” like teachers, firefighters who don’t qualify for subsidized housing but can’t comfortably afford market rent, and a proposed constitutional amendment on the November 3, 2026 ballot that would allow counties to exceed their debt limit and issue infrastructure bonds to essentially borrow against future property tax revenue that will be generated by new development to pay for infrastructure upfront (e.g. roads, water, sewer).
