Danny McBride has found his star for his upcoming “G.I. Joe” movie at Paramount, and yes, the rumors were true: it’s none other than Bradley Cooper. Deadline has the details.
McBride’s “grounded” take on the Hasbro IP gained steam earlier this year after Paramount had him and Max Landis write separate scripts as candidates to relaunch the film franchise. The studio passed on Landis’ treatment in March, while McBride teased details about his film on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast and elsewhere this past summer. One of those teases? That he had a wishlist for who might star in his “G.I. Joe” film, with Cooper at the top. Now it looks like McBride’s dream casting has come true.
Cooper boarding “G.I. Joe” shouldn’t be too surprising, however, considering he and McBride also linked up for McBride’s HBO series “The Righteous Gemstones.” The big question now is how the actor will fit McBride’s actioner into his busy schedule. Cooper is shooting his “Ocean’s Eleven” prequel with Margot Robbie right now in Europe, and also has voice-acting duties for Bong Joon-ho‘s “Ally.” He should be good to go for shooting “G.I. Joe” early next year, however, as the “Ocean’s” prequel hits theaters on June 27, 2027.
Along with directing, McBride co-writes “G.I. Joe” with Jeff Fradley and John Carcieri. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, and Zev Foreman produce the film via Hasbro Entertainment. “G.I. Joe” is one of several IPs that Paramount will relaunch in the coming years, including “Days Of Thunder,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “Top Gun 3,” “Call Of Duty,” and others.
Stay tuned for more details on McBride’s “G.I. Joe” film. Expect Paramount to have it in theaters for the Summer 2028 season.
