Issue of accountability

The article by the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha (Editorial page, August 10) makes sound points. Parliament has been in session for a while, yet the Home Minister has not made a statement on the brutalities unleashed on students. The students who protested were not aliens from outer space threatening the government, but India’s sons and daughters seeking accountability for examination paper leaks and education reforms. Even by its own standards, the government of the day cannot defend the alleged use of pellet guns on unarmed students, which has left deep scars on many of us.

The government has exhibited its total inefficiency in ensuring tamper-proof examinations. When paper leaks continue unabated, they become a political issue. Student victims collectively voicing their protest being brutally crushed, and the Prime Minister expressing forgiveness instead of offering an apology, reflects both culpability and incompetence. Due corrections are imminent.

Peace, political courage

The Israeli Prime Minister’s rejection of a U.S.-backed peace plan, even as Hamas signals acceptance, underscores how electoral calculations often overshadow the pursuit of peace. The tragedy is that both sides seem trapped by their internal politics, with civilians paying the price. Sustainable peace requires leaders on both sides who are willing to risk their political careers for the sake of human lives. That courage seems rare today.
