Wrong-way driving can happen for a number of reasons, whether it’s an impaired driver, someone who needs medical attention, or someone who may just be confused.
But safety officials say no matter the reason why, the result could be deadly.
NBC Connecticut obtained video of a scary sight on Interstate 84 early Saturday morning: A driver heading the wrong way with their hazards on, and cars honking, trying to bring attention to it.
“It’s always our worst fear if somebody’s driving the wrong way of any interstate, even a secondary roadway,” Connecticut State Police Trooper Stefanie Gurski said.
State police said the call came in just after 1:30 a.m. near Exit 30 in Southington for a driver going west in the eastbound lanes.
This video, timestamped at 1:39 a.m., shows troopers flagging the driver down.
The car was eventually found and towed near Exit 28. State police say the driver needed medical attention.
“She made it to the hospital, and that’s okay, and she’s getting the care that she needs, but unfortunately she did make it a long ways away,” Gurski said.
She wasn’t charged, and luckily no one was hurt.
Then, the next day, a wrong-way crash happened in Torrington.
“Good thing that the troopers were out there. They stopped them. We had multiple calls for 911. and people are using the resources,” Gurski said.
Police said a man named Darwin Perez Toalongo was driving the wrong way on Route 8 and crashed into another car. No injuries were reported, but troopers say Perez Toalongo was under the influence and was arrested.
“We want to make sure that if you are operating on the roadway and you see somebody out there that may be driving impaired or maybe not impaired, like a medical emergency, we want to make sure that you’re calling 911, pull over to the side of the road,” Gurski said.
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CT DOT) has also been working to stop wrong-way drivers by installing wrong-way detection systems. There are now 300 of them across the state, and they appear to be working.
Since 2023, the signs have been active 1,300 times. CT DOT said around 1,100 drivers have self-corrected before entering the highway.
Since 2015, data show there have been at least 88 wrong-way crashes in Connecticut.
CT DOT reminds drivers that to help prevent these crashes from happening, they should slow down, not drive distracted and stay sober and vigilant.
