LINUX KERNEL

Currently there is a policy requirement for Linux kernel patches where AI tools contributed, they should be documented with an "Assisted-by:" tag to make clear AI was used in the creation of said patch. But Linux kernel developers are now looking at dropping this requirement amid the rampant use of AI/LLMs.

A patch removing the Assisted-by requirement was recently posted to the Linux kernel mailing list. At the Linux Maintainers Summit last week in Prague, there was reportedly consensus on deprecating this requirement. Thus the patch is removing the documentation that lays out the assisted-by tagging needed.

Assisted-by LLM tag

Not all are in favor of this decision on the Linux kernel mailing list. Some have expressed their desire to see it removed while others would like the clarity of over a patch being helped along by AI/LLMs or not. Thus the LKML thread resulting in mixed views over whether this tag should be removed. But as it was already agreed upon by key maintainers at last week's summit, it will likely proceed as planned in the near future.

Dropping Assisted-by LLM tag requirement

The topic of this attribution requirement was also discussed this past summer in Linux Kernel Developers Again Discussing AI Agent Attribution - Potentially Dropping It for more background on the topic.
