Barack and Michelle Obama have made no secret of the turbulent marital seas they've navigated for decades. But after the 44th President opened up – yet again – about the 'tension' in his marriage, I've got to ask: has the Obama union finally hit the rocks?

Barry confessed in a Bible-length New Yorker article this week that Michelle is keeping close tabs on his post-presidential endeavors: 'She wants to see her husband easing up and spending more time with her, enjoying what remains of our lives.'

Remains of our lives?

Sounds serious for a fit 64-year-old guy with a 62-year-old wife.

Is someone sick or is the marriage just terminal?

In this latest interview Barack lamented how Democrats beg him to get back out on the campaign trail, but his wife apparently wants him in a rocking chair on the porch of one of their gilded homes in Martha's Vineyard, Washington DC, Chicago or Hawaii.

'I understand why [Democrats] feel that way,' he said, 'because people aren't looking at me in historical comparison to other Presidents. 

'They don't care about the fact that no other ex-President was the main surrogate for the party for four election cycles after they left office,' he said. 'It does create a genuine tension in our household and it frustrates her.'

Maybe Michelle wants her superstar hubby to quit politics in favor of a typical retirement – though, on the other hand, it also seems like she doesn't want anything to do with him either.

Barack blubbered back in 2023: 'I was in a deep deficit with my wife [after leaving the presidency], so I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things. 

'Let me just say this: It sure helps to be out of the White House and to have a little more time with her.'

Guess what, El Presidente? She doesn't want to spend any time with you!

Remember when she went onstage in 2022 with Beyoncé's mom to moan about her husband? She dropped this nugget: 'People think I'm being catty by saying this – it's like, there were 10 years where I couldn't stand my husband, and guess when it happened? When those kids were little.'

Lady, I don't think you're catty, I think you're miserable!

She didn't stop there: 'And for 10 years while we're trying to build our careers and worrying about school and who's doing what and what, I was like, "Ugh, this isn't even." And guess what? Marriage isn't 50/50 – ever, ever. There are times I'm 70, he's 30. There are times he's 60, 40…'

Nah, I'd say this marriage is 100, as in 100 percent doomed.

Never forget those painful pictures of the former First Couple pretending to enjoy a tennis date at the 2023 US Open. Michelle seemingly couldn't hide the utter disdain on her face? Or that 2025 summer trip when Michelle bolted the US and boated around Mallorca looking like Stella searching for her groove?

And that was after Michelle infamously skipped President Jimmy Carter's January 2025 funeral, leaving her husband jaw-jacking with a then President-elect Trump, like they were boarding school buddies reliving their favorite pranks. A few weeks later Michelle went AWOL at Trump's second inauguration.

I don't think that Barack playing doctor to an ailing Democrat party is what sickens her; I think it's him.

In her book The Light We Carry, Michelle shed a little light on her controlling nature, writing, 'You can establish systems and routines, anoint your various sleep, feeding and disciplinary gurus from the staggering variety that exist.

'You can write your family bylaws and declare your religion and your philosophy out loud, but, at some point, sooner rather than later, you will almost surely be brought to your knees, realizing that despite your best and most earnest efforts, you are only marginally – and sometimes very marginally – in control.'

Woah. Chill out.

I'll tell you what Barack's New Yorker interview really reads like: an excuse.

'Sorry, Michelle. I can't join you on David Geffen's yacht this year, the guys asked me to help them save democracy. Tell Oprah and Leo DiCaprio that I said hello.'

Barack Obama has offered a rare and candid glimpse into his marriage - and it turns out Donald Trump is causing trouble at home.

The former President, 64, admitted in an interview that Michelle wants him to step back from public life so the couple can enjoy their later years together.

The problem? He keeps getting pulled back into the politics of the day.

The former commander-in-chief said Trump's return to the White House is the reason he cannot simply walk away, and that his inability to do so has become a source of friction at home.

'It does create genuine tension in our household, and it frustrates her,' Obama told The New Yorker. 'I'm more forgiving of it, I understand why people feel that way.'

He also pushed back against critics who say he isn't doing enough, arguing his continued involvement is without precedent. 'No other ex-president was the main surrogate for the party for four election cycles after they left office,' he said.

As for the public clamor for him to do still more, Obama was philosophical: 'The fact that people want me to be doing more is a good sign.'

Obama was just 47 when he entered the White House and 55 when he left - younger than most of his predecessors - and has remained one of the most active ex-presidents in modern memory.

Just last month, Obama was the top national figure supporting the Virginia amendment to gerrymander the state's congressional maps and give a number of currently GOP-controlled seats to Democrats.

He also recently appeared alongside New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani during a visit to a childcare center.

Obama left a group of children in fits of giggles as he pulled a stunt on them during a visit to a childcare center in New York in April.

He and Mayor Mamdani read to preschoolers and led a sing-along during the visit, and did not take questions after their appearance.
