It makes sense, as the automaker needs to keep up with Kia and its compact EVs—but could an Ioniq 7 also be in the cards?
Don't expect the Ioniq 4 to look exactly like the Hyundai Ioniq Concept Three (above)—it will be a compact crossover very much in the classic CUV body-style Photo by HyundaiThe compact and sub-compact EV segment in Canada is heating up, as we’ve highlighted in the past couple of weeks, with two relatively inexpensive new models coming to showrooms in the form of the Nissan Leaf S and the Kia EV3. The former, with a base price of $34,995; and the latter at just $2,000 more represent a new front in the EV revolution in this country. These segments are the hottest in Canada, so if you want to continue to grow your market share, you need EVs of this size.
So it’s no surprise Kia’s sister company, Hyundai, has plans to bring in its own zero-emission compact EV crossover, ostensibly badged the Ioniq 4. That was recently confirmed by a Hyundai executive, speaking with U.K. outlet AutoExpress. Under the EV-specific Ioniq brand, Hyundai currently sells the mid-size Ioniq 5 SUV, the Ioniq 6 sedan, and the full-size Ioniq 9 in Canada, along with the Hyundai Kona Electric, with that model the least expensive of the four, at a base price of $43,999.
No word on pricing of the Ioniq 4 yet, but one would expect it to be priced under $40k bar, which when combined with the $5,000 federal and $2,000 Quebec-resident rebates, would make this EV priced like a gasoline vehicle.
Hyundai builds an Ioniq 3 in Turkey for the European market, but that sub-compact is not expected to go on sale in Canada, as it is considered too small for domestic tastes. Kia builds a similar sized model, the EV2, which also is unlikely to come to Canada.
AutoExpress speculates Hyundai also has a mid-sized all-electric EV in the works, one that would be badged the “Ioniq 7,” and would further the automaker’s zero-emission stable. Given the pace at which Kia is bringing new EVs to global markets, that seems very likely. The question is, apart from the Chinese, are any other automakers committed to competing in these popular segments, or are they just going to sit still and watch the Koreans and Chinese gobble up this market share around the world?
