It’s hard to see now, with New York City’s once-iconic skyline swallowed up by bland contemporary architecture, but the Big Apple was once an Art Deco mecca.
Fragments remain in landmarks like the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center, along with smaller pieces scattered around the city. Worn & Wound, a proud NYC-based company, invokes this artistic heritage in a new collaboration with the Italian watch brand Echo/Neutra.
The Rivanera W&W Edition features a new Art Deco-inspired dial.Worn & WoundThe Rivanera W&W Edition is defined by its intricately detailed Art Deco-inspired dial. It depicts five two-sided shapes rising from the bottom of the rectangular dial into a soleil-textured background.
A small seconds display appears at 6:00, decorated with a spiral motif that breaks up the otherwise straight lines of the design.
The Rivanera features a 27mm-wide titanium case.echo/neautraTime is indicated by the Rivanera’s standard handset, featuring a Breguet-style hour hand alongside stick minute and second hands, coated in a matte black finish.
Contrasting brushing and etching accomplish all of the details. The only printing appears on the underside of the flat sapphire crystal, where the watchmaker’s name appears to float above the dial.
The Rivanera W&W Edition Grade 5 titanium case features a bead-blasted finish.Worn & WoundThe dial’s color and tone match the Rivanera’s signature 27mm wide by 41mm long Grade 5 titanium case. Bead-blasted surfaces are contrasted by polishing along the stepped midcase.
An ETA Caliber 7001 hand-wound movement inside allows for a sleek 5.9mm case height.
It’s easy to read into the Rivanera W&W Edition as an ode to New York on multiple levels. A century on, Art Deco is still intimately tied to the city’s history, and the dial’s image evokes the feeling of stepping out onto its storied streets.
The five monumental shapes on the dial evoke the feeling of walking among New York City’s buildings. Worn & WoundThose five shapes on the dial taper to sharp points, creating the perspective of looking up at monumental buildings. The soleil texture behind them represents sunlight and creates a positive emphasis.
Meanwhile, the mesmerizing swirl of the small seconds dial suggests the hurried pace of life in the City that Never Sleeps, with seconds passing in a blur.
The swirling texture of the small seconds dial suggests the dizzying passage of time. Worn & WoundThe Echo/Neutra x Worn & Wound Rivanera is available now from Worn & Wound’s Windup Watch Shop for $1,810, which incluces a black cordovan leather pin buckle strap and a black rubber pin buckle strap. It is a limited edition of just 100 pieces.
