Safety changes planned for Main Street, Albany Avenue intersection in Hartford

Дата публикации: 10-09-2026 20:44:31

State transportation officials are proposing safety improvements to a busy intersection near Dunkin Park in Hartford that has seen at least 15 crashes since 2015.
The Connecticut Department of Transportation’s (CT DOT) plans for the intersection of Main Street and Albany Avenue in Hartford include replacing its traffic signal, realigning the intersection, reducing the number of lanes and shortening pedestrian crossings.
“It’s an antiquated traffic signal that needs to be upgraded; the crosswalks, the pedestrian appurtenances need to be upgraded,” CT DOT project manager Jon Dean said.
Dean said different ideas were considered, including the possibility of installing a roundabout. Officials ultimately settled on a plan designed to make traffic more efficient, with smoother turns and easier access for pedestrians.
“What we’re proposing now is a more straightforward signal replacement, realigning the intersections, reducing the number of lanes so the pedestrian crossings will be shorter,” he said.
CT DOT officials say the changes could also help prevent crashes at the intersection.
“We do see a high number of angled crashes where you have conflicts between cars maybe going through an intersection and turning,” he said.
According to the UConn Crash Data Repository, there have been at least 15 crashes at the intersection since 2015.
People who regularly navigate the area described concerns about crossing the busy intersection.
“Some people like to run the red lights and stuff,” Hartford resident Adrian Zamora said.
Hartford resident Keocean Wolfe compared crossing the intersection to a video game.
“Kind of like playing Frogger in the worst way,” he said.
Another Hartford resident, John Wyatt, described the traffic as part of city living.
“It’s par for the course with city living,” he said.
CT DOT held a public meeting Thursday to hear community feedback about the proposal. If all goes as planned, construction would not begin until 2028.
Wyatt said the improvements have been a long time coming.
“It’s much more needed and much overdue,” he said.
