In this issue of JAMA Psychiatry, in a cohort study drawn from the Danish population registry, Steinberg et al concluded that neither medication abortion nor procedural abortion was associated with a statistically significant increase in the risk for psychotropic medication use after adjustment for multiple testing. They estimated the risk of mild mental health symptoms before and after abortion by considering filled psychotropic medication prescriptions before and after a first-time, first-trimester abortion, according to whether the method was pharmacologic or procedural. Each patient served as a self-matched control by comparing the incidence rates of mild mental health problems in the periods immediately before (1 year) and in several periods after (≤1 year, >1 to 2 years, >2 to 5 years, and >5 years) the abortion. In Denmark, psychotropic medication prescriptions by general practitioners usually indicate less severe mental health problems than those diagnosed and treated by mental health specialists, hence the description as mild. This investigation follows the authors’ previous publication using the same data source and study design, which indicated that neither medication abortion nor procedural abortion increased the risks for any first-time psychiatric diagnosis, mood disorder diagnosis, or anxiety or stress disorder diagnosis.
