BANGKOK: The Ministry of Tourism and Sports ‒ represented by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) ‒ has joined forces with the Ministry of Transport (Department of Airports) to spearhead an initiative allowing eligible transit and transfer passengers to leave airports during longer connections and explore nearby destinations before returning for their onward flights.
The initiative was formalised yesterday (Oct 5) with the signing of a Letter of Intent between the TAT, Department of Airports and four partner organisations: the Airlines Association of Thailand, Thai Airways International, Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel Co Ltd and Kasetsart University’s Faculty of Engineering.
The agreement aims to turn passengers’ layover time into tourism activity and spending by connecting airports with nearby attractions, restaurants, shops, local communities and other tourism businesses.
Under the planned ‘Amazing Thailand Transfer Passenger Privilege’ project, travellers would be offered short itineraries and other benefits based on the amount of time available between connecting flights.
Initial concepts include ‘City Express’, ‘Food Express’ and ‘Wellness Express’, offering passengers opportunities to visit attractions, sample Thai cuisine and access wellness services during their layovers.
TAT will lead coordination between government agencies, airports, airlines, tourism operators and other participating businesses.
The programme is intended to provide convenient and safe travel options while ensuring passengers have sufficient time to return to the airport for their connecting flights.
TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool said passengers travelling through Thailand should not be viewed simply as people waiting for their next flight, but as potential tourists who can spend money and experience the country during their available time.
The initiative forms part of government efforts to strengthen Thailand’s position as a regional aviation and tourism hub.
The agreement signed yesterday marks the start of cooperation to develop the programme. Details of participating airports, passenger eligibility and the launch date have yet to be announced.
