Teaching an intro to robotics for the past month or so has been very interesting. I think I’ll integrate some of this material into my usual classical mechanics and multivariable calculus courses. Small manipulator robots with just a few links make for some great exercises and examples.

eka-mark said: @eightyonekilograms The forward kinematic map (mapping e.g. joint angles to end effector positions) is a differentiable map between manifolds, and its derivative (or Jacobian, in coordinates) is the map relating joint angle velocities to end effector velocities. So differential calculus is essential to manipulator dynamics. Does that address what you’re asking about?
