Ewan McGregor is being probed by the council over claims that unauthorised works have been carried out on his new £2million home in Scotland.

The actor, 52, bought an 18th century country retreat in Perthshire last year which has around 18 acres of land and gardens.

The Category C-listed 10 bedroom property is in the Carse of Gowrie and just a 35 minute drive from Crieff where McGregor grew up.

The Star Wars and Trainspotting star has been spotted regularly in the area in recent weeks and it is understood he will now split his time between Scotland and Los Angeles.

Since buying the home, he has been given permission by Perth and Kinross council to erect a replacement garage and to create a new master bedroom and bathroom suite.

However, the local authority received a complaint that alleged 'unauthorised works' have been carried out on the listed building.

The planning department has launched an enforcement enquiry into the matter and will make a decision by March.

According to Perth and Kinross Council's website, listed building consent 'is required for any internal or external alteration, extension or demolition of a listed building which would affect its character as a building or structure of architectural or historic interest'.

It also states that it is an offence 'to carry out works to a listed building without consent and may be subject to enforcement action'.

If an enforcement notice is served and not complied with, offenders can be fined up to £50,000 in court.

Property records show McGregor bought the property last May for £2.35 million. It had been on the market for offers over £2.15 million.

It comes with a gate lodge and a courtyard of outbuildings and has more than 15,000 sq ft of living space on three floors, with a two-bedroom flat, stores and a wine cellar on the lower ground floor.

The accommodation includes an entrance hall, three reception rooms, a billiards room, a family room, a study and a 1930s hothouse/conservatory.

'What I miss the most about Scotland, is of course my family. My mum and dad and my brother (Colin) and his wife Sarah and my nephew and my niece,' McGregor previously said.

'I miss the landscape. I miss the air in Scotland. I miss the smell of the rain, the smell of the green and the colours of Scotland. And the people and the culture. I could just keep going on and on.'

The actor left Scotland as a teenager to pursue his acting ambitions in London. He later moved to the US after his Hollywood career took off.

A Perth and Kinross Council spokesperson said: 'An allegation regarding this property was recently reported to us and our officers will consider the matter in line with our planning enforcement charter.'
