Two stories.
One - I was up early because my father had our friends from California visiting and they were due to fly back that morning, so, I was going to go to Dad's house and we would go get breakfast before going to the airport.
I turned on the television and they had just interrupted the local news to go to New York and the Today Show to show images of smoke billowing from the Trade Tower and the hosts were saying that a small plane had crashed into the building.
I called up to Dad's house, because, for some reason or another, I thought this might have an effect on flights out of Sea-Tac.
As soon as Dad picked up the phone, the second plane hit and all Dad heard was "Oh shit. Oh shit. Oh shit."
I told Dad to turn on the television and call the airline to see what was happening with our friends flight, while I made ready for work, because, as a delivery driver, I needed to report in and see if I was still delivering packages that day.
I did, but it was a short run, because, by the time I got to work, they were grounding the flights, and whatever packages had been delivered to the warehouse were on the truck and we were told to go with what we had.
Meanwhile, Bill and Angela's flight had been grounded, so, Dad took them to the nearest rent-a-car only to discover that everyone else was doing the same thing, and they had to go to two or three places before they could rent a car to drive back to Southern California to their daughter's.
They drove straight through and made it in a little over 18 hours.
Back at work, one of my coworkers and her daughter had flown back to New York for the birth of her first grandchild and they were staying at the hotel next to the Trade Centers when the planes hit.
The hotel was evacuated, but they had to leave everything behind, and Karen and her daughter ended up walking across one of the bridges to the Burroughs where her son and daughter-in-law lived and she gave birth the next day.
She was unable to get a hold of us for about a week because of difficulties with the phone lines in and around New York, but she finally called and we put her on speaker phone to say everything was alright, but, once the planes started flying again, they were going to have to come back without their luggage because the hotel was still closed due to it being so close to Ground Zero.
I think it took over a month before her luggage was shipped back to her.
